Wow, really great work. The diorama concept will look really interesting on the table.

My big question at the moment is what is the best technique for painting freehand symbols etc.? I have a steady hand, but there is so little paint on the brush tip it dries out before I can put it on the model. If I water down the paint, it tracks up the brush away from the tip and I have nothing to paint with!

I have been having the same problem. The consistency is hard to obtain (paint coverage, flow, etc.) If I manage to get it correct with water, the consistency changes in the paint tray after just a couple of figs. To alleviate this I have been covering my paint tray with a lid to prevent evaporation. I'm really not pleased with this. I also pretty much wash the brush out between figs because the paint dries at the tip preventing proper flow of the paint off the brush.

I have been told by others (have yet to try it) that the 'real' solution is to paint the tiny details with enamel paint (because it takes longer to dry so it will flow more consitently off the brush for a longer time, I'm sure dependent on what solvent you use).

Another idea, along the same tack, I have been thinking of thinning my waterbased paints with Testors thinner instead of water for the details. It doesn't evaporate nearly as fast as water.

Elsmore,

That stand looks brilliant, a fantastic idea to base them all like a diorama, It will take a long while to build the army but will be well worth it if they all come out like that.

I feel your pain on the symbols ;D Its a nighmare to get consistancy, Especially in white as you need it to be thicker to cover the blue, you may be right about thining the paint, There must be something on the market,

Have thought about trying a stamp i.e like the old potato print things you used to used at shool, if you cut a U shape in say cork, soft wood, rubber etc and use it to print, But have not tried it..... would be very hard in 6mm and would require the stamp to be cleaned afte reach operation due to paint build up but may work..

As for any other colour i use Fine tipped marker pens like the ones you write on blank discs etc and have had great results, but they dont do white so its does not help you ;D

Keep up the great work regards epic

Mate,

That is lovely work, a great idea to do a mini diarama for each base, I have been thinking the same with E&C Frenchmen when they come out.

Cheers
Aaron

That base is fantastic (as are the Marines). For teeny-tiny details (like freehand symbols), I use a Windsor&Newton 7 series (size 0) and a wet palette. Different colours need different amounts of moisture and water, and I usually experiment a bit. Dark symbols (black/brown etc) I usually go with a tiny amount of pure ink. For light symbols (like white), I go with colour and accept a small amount of mistakes. Then I apply the original colour, polishing the symbol into the shape I want.

Examples:
Grey Knight Strike Cruiser (black ink on parchment background)

Grey Knight Land Raiders (the red and white inscriptions are polished with white and red respectively):
