how do i hilight different textures red without making it look too pink? ?sometimes teh orange highlights look kinda weird to me. This is a great dilemma for me, because my favorite color is red. (so i want everything to have at least some red ? )
for example, glassy or crystalline textures (like the prism of a fire prism, space marine eyes), cloth (banners n stuff), surfaces painted red (like a rhino, or the armor of titans, etc)

I think that, if you dont want to go via orange, the best way is to add strong white highlights, and then glaze with red ink. This should give the look that you are after. Let me know if it works.

Another option maybe to start with a very dark base colour, and highlight to the colour you want. I.e. start with scab red or similar, highlighting up to blood red. This way the colours used are just reds, and no pinks or oranges.

yeah, but that kills a bright red base. I like the white/red ink idea. Just water it down to make it not shiny.

You can start with a deep crimson red and highlight up to have a vibrant color. Use a red that has a fair amount of blue in it to get a good jewel-tone. If you have to, use as true a red as possible and add a drop of purple ink to several parts red, but it would be better to just get a really deep red to begin with.
Starting with a brownish red will give less vibrant results, but might be better for somethink like orks.

My technique for clean bright looking red is as follows:
Base coat of blood red over a skull white undercoat.
Mix a little black into some blood red and add a little water to make a thin wash (not and ink wash).
Add the wash to the model, then wipe away any wash from the raised bits with a second damp brush.
Now add your white highlights, and once dry, do one or two more colour washes to unify the highlights.
It takes a little more time, but the result is very pleasing.
