excellent work!!! Loving this.

Will look in my bit box because I think I have a chaos rocket launcher from 40k, will measure it if I have it.

Looking really really good.  I would love to be able to create models like this.

I have a Defiler kit. It's still unassembled and in it's box. Give me a few to find it.

Edit:

OK got your measurements.

Each rocket cylinder has a diameter of 5mm making the rack 15mm wide and 10mm high.

The launcher casing (box) is 15mm in length. In addition the "flange" (or whatever you call it) of the missile launcher tubes extends 4mm in the front and the back for a total length of 23mm.

Need anything else let me know.

Thanks, Malakai.

The claws are modelled after the real thing. They're big in 28mm as well.

Though would it make sense to make the front claws a bit smaller? I think they look a bit big

I've learned to pay attention to Hena, and double checked the front claws. Damn it, they were too big.

Naturally I checked AFTER I made a lot of tweaks to get it to dock to the main body. Ugh.

Edit - They were 33% too big.

And here we go. We now have 3 distinct parts: the rear leg pair, the lower body, and a front claw.

I decided to dispense with the purposefully tilted claw idea and instead adapted the peg-in-hemisphere idea, which will allow repositioning and hence variety.

The big man himself, programmer of MoI, Michael Gibson, fixed my cannon geometry.

This leads to the next problem: the head. I cannot make a convincing castable head as part of this piece, since my artistic skills == 0. And we don't want yet another piece and mold just for the head, do we?

Is it possible to nick a substitute from a Chaos Warrior head or would that be too big?

Could you do simply a hemisphere extruded down toward teh body and the split the front to make a faceplate kinda like boba fet? from there you could tweak the shape a bit to make it flare or follow more of the 40k version.

Could you take your best stab at modelling it? You have the W40k one as a guide and I have faith in you. It might be tricky and take a while, but the face of a model - even when it's a crazy walking tank thing - is a focal point for the viewers gaze and getting it right is important. Without a recognisable head the Defiler would just looks like a weird walking mechanoid thing that could be crewed, with one, it gets more personality and sense of it being control of it's own destiny.

At least it's a helmeted head of lines and curves rather than being humanoid or demonic looking. I'd maybe go along with Vaaish said, though suggest the line up the middle only goes half way up and you attempt eyes for it. Curves are nice but if they're tricky for you/your program you could always make it a little more angular if needs be. And while horns look nice if they'd be tricky you could omit them (people could always glue some of their own on it they were particularly bothered), or make them more like spike/blade like.

What about a very 'angular' head (something like the Chaos Champion model)?

Some kind of a cylinder with a T carved in the front would suffice as a head. Similar to medievil knights helmets like this a combination if this two :
For the chape:

For the visor:
