The discussion on Chaos aircraft prompted a thought that it is the Strategy roll more than the Initiative that determines which formations will get used first, and that this may not be entirely appropriate.

This could be rectified sligtly by both sides declaring their first formation to be used, and modifing the stratey roll accordigly. This is done by deducting the Initiative rating for the declared activation from the Strategy rating, and then adding a D6 as usual. eg
  • Ork strategy roll to deploy Fighta-bombas on Ground attack start on 2+
  • Ork strategy roll to deploy Fighta-bombas on CAP start on 0+
  • Black Legion strategy roll to start Helltalons on CAP start on 2+
  • Black Legion strategy roll to manoeuver Forlorn Hope start on 3+
  • Marines to start TBolts on CAP is 3+
  • Marines to do anything else is 4+

The winner then takes the defined actiation roll, while the loser is not committed to using that formation or acticvation. If the winner decides to let the loser go first, then the loser takes the defined activation roll, while the winner may then change the formation or activation

I like this a lot as a game mechanic idea... not sure it could be easily retrofitted into Epic at this point, but I do like it a lot.
