Hi there. I can't remember if garrisoning was part of the original Epic:Armageddon rules or something the community added later (and I don't have the rulebook available here at work to check).

Can anyone set me straight? If not, I'll check when I get home.

Thanks in advance.  :)

Technically it's part of the GT Scenario.

Garrioning on overwatch was added later.

Added by whom? GW or the community?

I'm pretty sure it's in one of the errata and thus official. I think...

Just remember that "garrisoning" isn't a general rule, but a "special rule" specific to the "Tournament Scenario".

Now, garrisoning is used in a lot of other scenarios, but it was created with the scenario above in mind and may not be balanced in all other situations.

For reference:

Conceptually, it was Jervis that came up with the Garrison/OW rule because he received a lot of feedback that the garrison ability was not useful.  It was in his very first "Experimental Rules" doc in October 2005.  The playtesters that showed that allowing every garrison to OW was broken, so it was limited to a set number of formations as a compromise.

Neal, was it you who brought the hordes of Mekboy Gunzmobz to a tournament to prove that point?  Did anyone punch you after that?

I've never been a fan of the Garrison on OW rule, but then I do play Necrons...

Yes, I did.  No one hit me, but I pre-emptively apologized on every game.

I don't think it was necessary.  My take on it is that it's genesis is that people get burned by it and decided it was unfair/useless rather than a tactical error in their deployment.

Another example of that effect would be that no one ever forgets the first time they get caught with intermingled formations and lose a huge chunk of their army.  People come away from an experience like that with a sense that it's unfair, but once it's part of the game knowledge it loses the 'gotcha' factor and becomes a real tactical choice, e.g. "Is the risk of intermingling greater than the benefit of mutual assault support?"

It's different with Garrison OW - not necessarily better or worse, unbalanced or more balanced, just different.
