In other threads there has been discussion on this that some armies are clearly better as they have better SR but still their units cost the same which is not balanced. Likewise things like initiative should be taken into account. One way could be to give percentage boost according to SR, like SR 1: +10% of points, 2: +5%, 3: 0, 4: -5%, 5: -10%. This is a bit cumbersome, does not take into account initiative and then would result "not the same point armies". Maybe a better way is to give away freebies if army has less SR than 5, hopefully based on total point cost. Imperial Guard Steel Legion does it right now, as Commissars. They are worth many points and thus can also be seen as compensation for lower SR and initiative - in this way, Titans and Navy in IG army "is not of same price as in space marine army", especially if commissars are handed out like 1 per 500 points as in handbook. Similar things could be in other armies. Currently many armies just get a free supreme commander upgrade but this is like 50 pts (1.67% in 3000 pts army) and I would propose something more like imperial guard commissars to other armies, too. This way "identical" Biel-Tan and Ulthwe armies would not be completely identical as Biel-Tan would get something bonus for its lower SR. Some ideas: for Biel-Tan, free exarch (or leader to some other unit) per 500 for Orks: free nobz stand per 500, attached to some mob which can have nobz for L&D: free 1 lesser daemon per 200 (or 5 to one greater) for BL: free 1 lesser daemon per 500 (or 5 to one greater) This would result that points of all units in different armies should be same if there are no other differences (i.e. extra specialities like TSKNF or formation size considerations) Comments? |

Good thoughts all. You'll probably find that most armies take many of these thoughts into consideration already (For example the Siegemasters, which have other balancing factors which, despite their SR1, mean the list is generally just as powerful, if not moreso, than the standard Steel Legion IG). |

(rpr @ Aug. 23 2007,09:24) QUOTE This would result that points of all units in different armies should be same if there are no other differences (i.e. extra specialities like TSKNF or formation size considerations) I don't think it is a good idea as the armies were not balanced by a grand unified formula but rather by feeling and playtesting. Most of the examples you gave simply don't need another upgrade. I would prefer directly fixing problems in army lists. |
