Basically, they don't fit.  Neither pods nor rhinos are rigged to allow assault marines to work out of them.

It's sort of silly based on the background.  Surely at some point in the last 10 millenia someone would have figured out a way to allow assault marines to land in a drop pod...

Personally, I think it's a quirk of the 40K rules.  Assault marines don't need the ability to ride in pods in 40K because they can deep strike from high atmosphere (basically a HALO drop from a Thunderhawk) on their own.  So, they aren't included in the list of drop pod units.

BTW, I hope to have time to make assorted edits to the docs this week.  1.1 will be mostly typos and verbiage clarifications but there might be some minor mechanic tweaks as well.

Well we can just say marine infantry and leave that distinction to future lists (so current core still no assault marines in drop pods, but maybe future lists could do it?). In general I am all in favour of widening and generalising the unit rules, and relying on army lists to restrict them.

The hellhound doesn't change here, as it would affect the steel legion, but does have those stats in the directors cut list that uses a lot of old models.

As to the rules changes, again no comment means like or grudgingly accept :)

Is the sniper change necessary? Should it be unit stats not the rule to be adjusted?

Implement the suggested change to MW - i.e. AP/AT/AA as normal with MW (or TK) as a special ability. Ajust each list to match, don't change any stats now though, wait till EpicA 2.

Would allow variant lists and future weapons to start adopting this change though, and make the weapon profiles more similar. Also remove the inconsistency with MW(general) and MW(AA) etc.

(Implications for barrage change? Would it have to be dropped for instance. Perhaps say if a MW has both AP and AT it may choose which to use to allow that change still or just tough cheddar to MW barrage changes and maybe give orbital attacks +1 to hit?)

In fact does this change need a separate mini discussion?
