There is one constant rule in Epic list development: If you want to write stats for a 40k unit in Epic, ask BlackLegion first, because chances are he's already done it... :)

...And he orders lots of books...  So BL has my vote. :agree:

I believe that some limited inclusion of experiment units/formations, a la 0-1, or <10% of total points, or some such can be done and still have a game that is balanced within reason. Balanced enough that it could even be encouraged at semi-official tourneys where some experimental lists are allowed anyway.

I think this can still happen, although maybe not in the way you originally envisioned.  Taking the direction this thread seems to be moving, an E-Zine that ran for a year or two would eventually have some elements that rose to the top and became acknowledged as more balanced than others.  A supplement that included these creme-de-la-Epic ideas could come with suggestions just as you made.  10% of the total or a 0-1 or any number of ideas.  After all, what good are the stats if there isn't some guidance on how to use them?

I find BL's directly translated stats are usually a very good starting point for formulating the epic stats of a unit, but often need a little rejigging to properly represent the unit in an epic way.

So any wish where i should start?
I could begin with a random Codex and work through all the squads/vehicles in there.

This is something I greatly appreciate in BlackLegion. Danke, Daniel.

BL if your looking for a starting point, i can't really give a good answer. my knowledge of the 40k universe is not as good as most on this sight. so why not pick something that you would think is a good start.
i'd be willing to bet w/ the seemingly endless amount of variant IG lists that this would be the one that most people want though.

Like removal of Lance off everything

I jest, I jest! Your effort is appreciated, BL!

Damn. Missed all the answers here. For no particular reason the board deletes my cookies and logs me out sometimes.

Ok i will start with the Imperial Guard.

Should i convert only new units? Or should i simply go over all units regardless if there are still existing stats for them just for completeness?

And a problem is that even the most basic units can be equipped with gear for specific roles. Fir example the Company Command Squad can be tailored to just sit back and do nothing apart from giving orders and pick our targets with Sniper Rifles and Camo Cloaks, can be outkitted with closecombat weapons, specialweapons and even a Heavy Flamer or being the standart unit we know as the Imperial Guard Supreme Commander unit.

Personally I would prefer that new units were in a collector's option. I think the reason half the army lists take so long to complete is that people always want the newest 40K unit types incorporated into the Epic lists and it throws the completion times out as the ACs try to add them in. It then requires longer playtesting etc etc. People often forget the reason GW release so many new units all the time is to get those frothing-at-the-mouth fanboy players to buy their stuff, regardless of how much rules creep that unit represents. Epic should not mirror 40K in all aspects - IMO it hampers Epic more than it helps it. An example of this would be the attempt to introduce the Vespids into the Epic Tau list. They required a stack of new playtesting to incorporate them well and they weren't even available as a mini to begin with.

Units stats are all fine and good, but what I had in mind were formations, as in: N of unit X, N of unit Y, etc.

Or, in the case of units which are clearly more appropriate to be unit upgrades, then +N units in formations X, Y, or Z, etc.

Otherwise, people will have too much potential to abuse the stats. With set formations, then they could take a standard army, but then throw in one of the experimental formations.

Again, this idea is for those units that ought to be generally available to a given army, and not restricted to a specialty alt-list.
