I have to agree hiding behind your transport is generally a bad idea, but hey, steel is better at stopping small arms than my face is, and that's what really counts.
Besides, you might be taking fire for only a moment and need to remount, if you've dove into a building then you're holding up the rest of the boys getting the Hell out of dodge.
The E:A rules nicely describe the common realities of IFVs being both death trap and flak shield, though I can tell you right now the IG want any extra survivability you can give them so I vote whole-heartedly in at least giving the poor bounders something to prevent every dead Chimera from also being 2 dead stands of Guardsmen.
The enemy will know true fear when they are staring down 10 Infantry Companies in cover and they have no artillery to displace them with (because I brought 12 thunderbolts...)
