Looks like a recoil piston. |

The Dwarf is right. It absorbs some of the recoil from the shot - a bit like a car shock absorber. |

It's a gas-exchange thingy which softens recoil. ![]() |

I would so love it if FW did an Epic version of this 40k scale earthshaker. I know they do the fixed platform. But I would love to see a mini version of this with the 2 sets of double wheels. If they did then I would have to start an Epic Siegemasters army. Cheers James |

Yep, the boyz be right ! ... You'll see a very similar "device" on many WWI and WWII Field Guns, as well as some today ... Recoil was and in some cases still a challenge. If a gun (or tube as we used to say) was "bounced" too far out of position cause by excessive recoil after firing a shot, the accuracy of the next shot would be way off. ?Not to mention the possible injuries to the crew ! ?Recoil reduction is important ! ![]() |

Now that we are at this, what is that spikey thing on top of the mk1 Manticore? A sensor? An anti-infantry weapon? |

(GrayDL @ Jul. 11 2007,06:59) QUOTE Now that we are at this, what is that spikey thing on top of the mk1 Manticore? A sensor? An anti-infantry weapon? I've always thought that is a counterweight. |

Here's the reference picture. I thought it was a nifty, funky sensor. |

Yeah, I'm thinking it's a Targeting/sensor array, like on the AH-64 Apache Longbow Attack Chopper ... And if you look you'll see 2 types of missiles on the launcher. Large ones on the bottom and smaller on top ... So one may be HE and the other AP/AT ? That's what I'd figure. But now with the new fluff ... maybe one is AAA/ADA ? ![]() |
