First Victoria Cross awarded to a NZ'er since WW2 (and one of only 12(?) awarded since WW2 to any nationality). Normally SAS member identities are kept hidden but it was judged too difficult to do this with a Victoria Cross winner. Good to see recognition for a real hero who risked his life for a mate, instead of all the shallow sport and entertainment 'stars' that seem to pass for that these days. From the citation of his action in Afghanistan: "In total disregard of his own safety, Lance Corporal Apiata stood up and lifted his comrade bodily. He then carried him across the seventy metres of broken, rocky and fire swept ground, fully exposed in the glare of battle to heavy enemy fire and into the face of returning fire from the main Troop position. That neither he nor his colleague were hit is scarcely possible. Having delivered his wounded companion to relative shelter with the remainder of the patrol, Lance Corporal Apiata re-armed himself and rejoined the fight in counter-attack." http://www.nzherald.co.nz/categor....0449084 |

That, ladies and gentlemen, is true heroism. Thankfully it wasn't awarded posthumously. |

That's a true Hero, and he survived ... And I too agree with you Markco, he's a real hero, not a media/sports diva ... And SAS are among some of the most "athletic" humans on the planet ... |

Best VC comment - Admiral Woodward (of Falklands fame) commented in his book on the conflict that when a destroyer of his went and drove around a suspect mined area (needed for the landings) trying to find them the old fashioned way (ramming them) it was VC material bravery - sadly the sort where you only get it if you find the mines ![]() |

What was more interesting was that Woodward dint tell that CO why he wanted the frigate there, but the CO guessed, did the mission and asked Woodward when he got back 'is there anywhere else you want me to check for mines?" |

More Heroic actions ... and these are guys like you and me. Not overpaid sports or movie/TV stars. ?When a civilian would say to me, "So were you like 'Rambo' ?" ?I'd say, ?"I was a real soldier, Rambo was a well know, highly paid actor ..." ?The media prefers to dwell on the media ... This NZer and that UK RN Cdr, as well as others are the real deal ... ?God bless them ... |
