After much mentioning of Epic on my behalf one of the guys from my local Geraldton gaming club is keen on giving Epic a go next week.

He wants to use my Nids which is probably not the easiest army to help someone get to grips with all the rules.

My plan is to bring two 1500pt armies so I can give him a run through of the game.

Unfortunately I am not that great on using the nid list effectively yet because I hardly ever play with them because my wife (and main oponent) hates the imagery of Nids with a passion, especially after reading Dan Alberts short story The Fall of Malvolion on the nid section of the GW US website.

One idea that he came up with was to play a two player 40K campaign over a course of weeks using a game of Epic to determine what games were played.  With preliminary bombardments used to represent supporting fire.  Possibly a crazy idea but since the guys want to learn how to play EA first Ive agreed to give it a try (I'll have to start thinking of Epic armylists where I have all the models to represent it available in the 40K scale).

Would love to hear any thoughts on the campaign system idea.

I would HIGHLY recommend not starting a new EPIC player with Tyranids as it's a very "special rules" heavy army and isn't really one to learn the "basics" of EPIC with.

I'd say try the training scenarios in the rulebook, or some "Minigeddon" 1000 point games of Imperials vs Orks if you can manage it.

I haven't actually played with Orks yet though I have enough for an army but they aren't really assembled properly and/or painted.

The idea is that I will make up both lists and bring them along.  I suggested against nids but he really wants to play them.

I could just bring Chaos for him (which he also plays in 40K) and suggest we get a handle on the rules first before going nids.

The other thing that I want to do is use fully painted armies to give the maximum coolness impact factor on the rest of the gaming group.

I could possibly do it with chaos vs eldar but due to the all over the place nature of my painting the only other army finished is Nids (though maybe I have 1000pts of Space Marines).

He is a veteran 40K, Fantasy etc gamer so should pick up fairly quickly.

Really the training scenarios are an excellent place to start from.  It is difficult to build armies if they do not understand the rules.

The Training scenarios let the new player learn the rules piecemeal preparing him/her for a bigger game. I am writting a series of articles for Firebase on playing the Epic Training Scenarios - trying to encourage pairs of non-Epic players can at least try the game out.  I just finished writing the 2nd article that discussed the War Engines and Flyers scenarios.  I still have yet to write an article covering army construction.  I am going to avoid Space Marines for this article and focus on Orks and Imperial Guard.  Space Marines are not a starter army for Epic - I should know I tried.

If somebody had introduced me to Epic using Tyranids I would have RAN (not walked) from the table.  Mark, I would focus more on the three core armies and less on whether or not they are painted.  You may get some comments about how they would look better painted or they should be in a specific scheme, but that can easily become the carrot for bringing 40K'ers into the game.

I played a guy a couple months back (Studderingdave) and we began by using one game of SMs vs. Orks (my choice) and SMs vs. Chaos (his choice).  Make the game go fast and loose, offer advice in the middle of the game, let him re-roll extremely bad rolls.  After all, you want to show him what a game CAN look like.

"Yeah, if you had rolled that it would have wiped you out.  Try re-rolling it though and I'll show you how it could have worked in your favor.  See?  That objective is yours - you just had a fluke die roll."

Good points, nid ain't for training... Also eldars won't be best solution either. Three basic armies and chaos works best for first games. Usually when I play first tutorial games, I leave aircraft to learn basics first.
And I have to admit that best games are orks vs IG, they just work out itself. :)

Maybe chaos Vs Imperial Guard then.  Just don't know orks well enought.  My chaos army is pretty simple, doesn't use summoning or anything like that, just bikers and marines in Rhinos mostly.
