Well... should be the correct place to post a bit of rant and request for ideas/opinion.

My web server is down so I'm moving to a more reliable server. In the mean-time, I'm thinking of doing a bit of redesign.

My existing site had three sections. The gallery (split off to all the different army). The Special Projects with the conversion guides. And also the updates page. OK... maybe also the navigation console that links it all together.

In my own experience, I look more for pictures and conversion guides more than the blurb that comes with pictures. Regular fans normally know the blurb and its only there for novice or strangers that come across your site.

But I guess the main focus I'm wondering is the gallery.

Some people just use things like photobucket to contain these. Others has a few nice pictures on a page full of blurb. Others have thumb nails along with small blurb and then a link with all pictures.

I'm undecisive. But to me, the less clicks the better.

What do people think is the ideal Gallery?

Organised by army. First units (in some sort of order) then detachments then scenic shots (you don't have to have all three, but if you do I like to know what each section contains.

General navagation page with thumbnails opening into full size pics.

For me number of clicks isn't an issue - but I want to get something at each stage. An 'admin/navagtion' click is a boring one.

A narrative of the army is good for first timers (if heavy on bandwidth) to the site - returnees want fast access to certain parts.

Perhaps a combination.

An army page with text, fluff, narrative, choice images. But at the top or on the menu choice to it a link to take me straight to the gallery of all the images. Logical order, thumbnails opening to larger.

general point on galleries of images I hate the photbucket style thing of images lapping onto multiple pages. i generally want to see the thumbnails of the image I want to get it quick, not go through 3 pages to find it. Perhaps the above catorgisation (units, formations, scenes) would be a page each with direct links to the second two from the first (whatever that first one was).

Oh and stick on a contact system so if someone wants to use images on their pdf armylist they know how to reach you (this board?).

Me personally I like pages that have four or five decent sized pictures (like 800 pixels across or so) I'm not a fan of clicking on little thumb nails to see pictures, though linking decent sized pictures to even higher res ones is good.

Web pages with a nice article with pictures in the text are really good.
