Hi all,
to make up for the drastic lack of films seen, here's the best stuff I read during this year:

Hellboy comics, by Mike Mignola  :devil:
the mysterious flame of Queen Loana, by Umberto Eco (as weird as they get)  :p
Herodotus' histories - surprisingly readable (translated to English though!) - this one was inspired by the upcoming film 300 :cool:
Thud! and Wintersmith, by Terry Pratchett    :laugh:
The Orange Girl, by jostein Gardner (very sad!)  :(
6 Lemony Snicket books (sorry, ran out of emoticons!)
A pair of Pearls before swine comic compendia (more laughs!)
The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov (weird too!)
The Corto Maltese comics 'Favola di Venezia' and 'Corte sconta detta arcana' by Hugo Pratt - fantastic!
And - vying with Corto and Herodotus for first place - Catch 22 by Joseph Heller - I'd never read this classic, and I just realised what I'd been missing! i've not finished it yet, but am almost at the end.

Not a bad year for reading at all! And Yossarian lives on...

Pirate Hunter, the true story of Captain Kidd. Awesome!  You can't write fiction this good.
Batavia's Graveyard. Gruesome! History's bloodiest mutiny with apothecaries, greedy Dutch merchantment, and a climax that could come right out of the movies.

Both historical, but both were fantastic fast reads.  Got em as a package deal on Amazon.   :D

Hmm, most of the books I read this year are academic books about global political economy (Noam Chomsky's 'Hegemony or Survival' probably the outstanding one), but I also read Norman Mailer's 'The Naked & the Dead'; a dense yet superb book about US soldiers in World War 2.  Thin on action, this concentrates on every detail of the character - warts & all.  It is very long though, I actually started reading this in 2005!

Also, I read Farhenheit 451, which is excellent, started reading 'Horus Rising'; this year I'd like to check out 'Blood Meridien' & 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy (the former a western, the latter a post--apocalyptic tale of survival)

Oh, I also read book 5 of the Walking Dead series 'The Best Defense' - probably the best comic book series out at the moment, I can highly recommend it to anyone.

:D  No. 'Top Ten' is the name of the series. I recommend them. Synopsis: Near future where 'super powers' are the norm, and the story of the police who work in this environment. Some very funny moments and references.

Maksim - I've only read the first in the series, Red Mars. How do the others compare?

The first was the best, but the other two definitely belong... very interesting look at the evolution of space exploration, terraforming and of humanity in general.

Chomsky is a brilliant linguist. I just wish that he had stuck with science instead of invective. His political writings seem very persuasive until you fact-check him... then they fall apart. Don't take my word on it... fact-check him.

His behavior is frequently hypocritical as well... for all that he criticizes Western culture, he also partakes of it heavily... such as with his financial investments and his intellectual property rights. In other words, he has a strong policy of "Do as I say and not as I do."

He also has supported some of the world's worst, most genocidal groups in history such as Saddam Hussein, Pol Pot, Hezbollah, the PLO, Beider Meinhof Gang and many others.

I guess what I'm trying to say to you as a friend is that I recommend you take Chomsky's political writing with a grain of salt. I've read almsot everything he has written and wrote a thesis about him and his work. There's a reason why Chomsky won't authorize biographies (I've read them all... the one authorized one and the unauthorized ones). I love the man as a linguist, but I can't stand his misguided attention-getting, money-seeking activism.

With 1 or 2 exceptions, I havent read a novel written in the last 100 years.
It was one of my personal aims to read not only VSF but also many classics I had never read (to my shame). ?I also had quite a bit of time at sea to read!

So on my 2006 redaing shelf was:
Dracula
Frankenstein
Moby ****
20,000 Leagues under the Sea
Journey to the Centre of the earth
The War in the Air
The Time Machine
The Lost World
Morcok's Warlord of the Air trilogy
Robur the Conqueror
some VSF anthologies

and I re-read War of the Worlds as well, but you probably guessed that too!

PS I cant believe the White Whale book title got sensored by the boards!
