Interesting reading about the role of SG as seen by Andy.

http://www.specialist-games.com/

Wow, it?s already been a month since our last content drop of cool Specialist Games articles. Here we are with Fanatic Online Issue 85.

We kick things off this month with a fully revised and updated rules set for Adeptus Titanicus. Thanks to Michael Lovejoy creating this PDF. These rules were first published in early issues of Epic magazine, they changed quite dramatically in later issues as we received feedback and through our own playtesting experience. Michael went back through all the updates and put the changes into the source document that we have published today.

Next, Nick Jakos presents us with a selection of Necromunda scenarios that all involve the capture or rescue of gang members.

Finally for this issue we have an example for the Warmaster campaign competition we are currently running. In this campaign by Warmaster champion, Ken South, we delve back into Warhammer history and follow Azhag the Slaughterer?s invasion into the Empire.

I have to apologise to Inquisitor players for the absence of the competition results article. Unfortunately I?ve been at of the office for the majority of time this week due to being on numerous training courses (including the always inane time management course) this has ? ironically ? left me short on time and so I?ve had to delay the competition results which will be published at a later date.

People who are outside or new the hobby often ask me what the Specialist Games are actually for. It?s an interesting question, which does not have a simple or even one clear answer. The first and most obvious response is to say it is to make money. After all, we are a business and we have responsibilities to our shareholders. However, whilst it is nice if our games do make a profit, believe it or not, that is not main driver for having them.

One of the main ? but not the only ? reasons is to give veteran gamers a place to go once they have become experts in our core systems. All of our games present new challenges and different scales and aesthetics to give hobbyists a fresh perspective on our hobby. For instance Inquisitor is a very different game with a hole different set ethics and mindset to playing 40K in a tournament setting. There is no correct or ?best? way to game so having Inquisitor in our range is a tool to show people how broad our hobby can be.

Now after having said that Specialist Games are used primarily for veterans of the hobby I?m now going to contradict myself and say this isn?t always the case. In fact in some countries, notably Germany, a few of the Specialist Games have been aimed at getting new blood into the hobby. Blood Bowl is a game where no previous experience with Citadel Miniatures or gaming is needed. This makes it very assessable to the traditional non-hobbyist. In fact the only game I?ve ever played against my wife was Blood Bowl. Although that didn?t go according to plan but there?s no helping some people!

Still, despite all the answers I?ve just given I believe the most important reason we have a Specialist Games range is because of the depth it gives our gaming worlds. Warmaster allows us to say that battles in the Warhammer world can happen on a truly massive scale. Necromunda details what it is to live and survive in a truly dangerous industrialised nightmare that is a hive world in the 40,000 universe. Without Epic, Titans and even the humble Leman Russ tank might never have appeared in 40K. So not only do the Specialist Games take and expand on existing themes but they also feed back into the core systems as well. It is for this reason, and all of the above, that we have, and will continue to have the Specialist Games range.

For now,
Andy @ Fanatic

Frankly I thought it was a few paragraphs of waffle to make the newsletter longer for the new 'improved' fanatic online.

I would have prefered news about February releases, rules development, what exactly he is doing to move SG back into mainstream as he stated last month. Actual news and information.

At least he's saying something.  Some word, even if it's "sorry guys, Real LifeĀ™ got ahold of me and I haven't been able to get done what I said I would," is still better than nothing.

I tend to disagree, I have friends who can blather on about nothing endlessly too and a few who can type in the same manner, it does not endear me to this much about nothing style of writing, in books its called, I believe "purple prose" or something of the sort.
Lets hear actual news, pertinate facts and regular progress reports.
By the way did you know I'm now an expert at all the core games, I know its true cause Andy said so.

"...It is for this reason, and all of the above, that we have, and will continue to have the Specialist Games range."

This part at the end makes me hopeful.  Sounds to me like he got some verbal promises from somebody up high that said 'Andy, we're going through a rough patch here at the company, but if we can get through this then we'll make sure we take care of your department.'

I hate to say it, but if I were in the same financial mess as GW I would be pulling back on all costs (especially SG) until I was able to get control over it.  January(or is it December?) is the magic month for their stockholder reports, so it makes sense that any good news/bad news will be on hold until then.

Grim, I didn't realize that you played any of the core games!

I have to apologise to Inquisitor players for the absence of the competition results article. Unfortunately I've been at of the office for the majority of time this week due to being on numerous training courses (including the always inane time management course) this has - ironically - left me short on time and so I've had to delay the competition results which will be published at a later date.

This is the quote I was talking about.  He's admitting that he's not been able to keep a promise, but he's doing what he can to remedy the situation.  It's not perfect, and it is an excuse, but he's talking to US, the players.  I'd much rather hear something, even if it is just a large quantity of polite bull to soothe our anger, than not hear anything.

I used to play Warhammer and Warhammer 40K, I still play 40K occasionally and have a decent Speed Freaks army, I would play and build a regular Ork army but I dont feel they work well enough to do so. Truthfully I've owned and played almost all their games except for LOTRs, I stoped buying directly from GW last year except for the ocasional epic purchase. so I have kinda slacked off doing anything much with my speed freaks,
Anyway I will conceed he did address one pertinate topic by letting the Inquisitor people know he hasnt forgotten that contest.

And not to mention the general gist of the blog was to convince us that Specialist Games isn't dying out. Which is at least a little reassuring.

Or: Let's fool customers into thinking SG is going to be around so they will buy more stuff before we kill of SG for good.
