In a surprising twist, I discovered that I may actually have a family crest! A friend found a web site with various family crests on it and my name was there.

Does anyone have details on how to verify this kind of thing (I am naturally sceptical, since the web site is in the business of selling things linked to the result)? Anyway, I kind of like the crest... now to pick up a Brettonian Knight to paint it up in the appropriate colours.

I am not wild about the family moto, though!

I think that the only parts that are specific to my family are the red field with silver crosses and a silver lion. The rest is standard background from the web site.

Let me know if you have a family coat of arms as well.

How about that, I found one for my surname, although I don't highly that it's specific to my family. If I knew how to do it, I would post it here.

Half my blood is from Clan Kerr of Scotland, which entitiles me to wear Clan Kerr Hunting Tartan kilts, and this is my clan crest:

The motto means 'Late but in earnest'.

The thing to remember on these is that they represent the surname and not the exact branch of any family.

In fact I think they just find the most common or famous coat of arms under that name for display

The reality is most of our ancestors were poor dirt faemers...who acquired guns in time.... :p

So have fun with it.

It would be a nice emblem for a IG regiment. ?

If your making a Bretoniam army you can make one knight for each the member here. ? :D

Here is my coat of arms

Incidentally mine didn't come from that website, I pulled my crest off the internet randomly because I happen to know what it is.

There you go. The motto is missing here - it would be 'Ostendo non ostento' - I take pride in my not boasting or something.... :p
I've also seen another version with a stag, somewhere.
CS, they're probably correct, but as CC pointed out, it doesn't necessarily mean you'll inherit a castle - although I'm still hoping!

E&C: Alba gu brath!

I personally am wary of any site looking for money for more information...but that's just me.

Well, on my Dads side, I decended from the Norman invasion apparently, and the flag does match up with a magnet thing I inherited about a decade ago (probably the same company), under the name of Webb. My mothers side was Blackman on the male side and Shrimpton on the female. Blackman being pre Norman, and Shrimpton being of definate Norman stock.

Umm they do seem to have a wide variety of offerings don't they!

Although the background information on the name is what I'd been told when I was younger.  Not sure why all Surnames warranted a crest however..

One thing that is still available to our name is that we've got a brand that we're allowed to use to put Pony's out on the New Forest.   Can't see my other half letting me brand her pony and kick it out in the cold though!  :D

So true, that would be a lot of models per week! So tempting..  Either that or sell if to the glue factory.

If I knew how to do it, I would post it here.

(If using Internet Explorer) Pull up the web page, right click on the coat of arms and select 'save picture as'. Then save it to the desktop. Reply to the post and use the 'browse' buttons here to locate the picture on your desktop.

E&C: I would love to find that I was related to a Scotish clan - my own tartan would be even cooler than a crest of arms!  :D

I agree that most of our ancestors were poor (but noble!) farmers, and I was surprised to find a crest even related to my family... especially since I have one for my mothers side as well (obviously a well born family!). Still, there are some names that dont have a crest, and the background does seem to match up with what I have been told as well.

My motto actually means: I find good.  :p

I am not sure whether I think that this is kind of nice and optimistic, or just a bit lame.

I already have something about this in my favourites list. :D

Crest here. ?History here. I particularly like this snippet:

"History has christened them the Border Reivers. They gave the words "blackmail" and "bereaved" to the English language. The stamp of the Reivers is still to be seen on the Border Lands - in it's architecture, culture and people. From the secretive fortified towns and farms to names that once struck fear into men's hearts - Armstrongs, Grahams, Kerrs, Nixons, Robsons, Beatties..."

Emphasis mine. ?I'm tempted to pay Vendel Miniatures a visit.

This is Kerr hunting tartan incidentally:

Only a Kerr clan member is allowed to wear it otherwise I'm honour-bound to hunt down the imposter and feed him to a haggis.
