I was going to post this to the Hammer's Slammers topic, but I decided that "another military sci fi story" isn't related closely enough. ?Still, I think that this story is one of the best examples of military science fiction writing that I've read. ?It's a tad rough, but it's easily as good as Drake's work. ?The story is set in the game universe of Master of Orion III, so there is some backstory that general readers will be unfamiliar with, but basically it's that the human race (as well as several other alien empires, such as the Meklar Evon and Raas) is ascendant again after having spent centuries under the brutal subjugation of the Anarans who occupy the Orion system.

Chronologically (as opposed to the order in which the stories were written) is Harvest Time, followed by The Assault on Orion I. ?Sadly, Harvest Time was never completed (to the best of my knowledge). ?You may want to just read The Assault on Orion I (which was written first, and is self-contained). ?Then again, Havest Time is a better story (with better characterization and human drama) even if it's missing an ending.

You better pray that they don't get 'finished' in the manner that Kevin J Anderson is finishing*** the Dune series.

*** Basically by inflicting repeated acts of degredation on a once-great series of novels.

Hmmm ... interesting ... may have to do more reading on this ...  But I don't think the Col. or Maj. Steuban will like it !  :D

Who are you kidding.  Only the first two Dune books are readable.  The third is marginal, and I think you need to be on LSD to follow novels 4-6.

I don't know about the LSD part  :p , but I have to agree with Lion. The Dune series went steadily down hill.

No way.

Dune was excellent, Messiah average, Children of Dune a little above avera, God-Emperor excellent, Heretics very good, Chapterhouse very good.

Now bring in his son:

House of... medium - good
Legends of... okay outside of the dune universe, below average inside

Latest:
Hunters of Dune - I have a very bad feeling....

My older siblings, whose opinions I respect greatly in these matters, told me not to bother with anything but the first Dune novel.

Which reminds me, another fine writer of Sci-Fi stories with a strong military bent is Lois McMaster Bujold.  Her Miles Vorkosigan series is just grand.  She has summed up her writing style thusly: "think up the worst thing you can do to your character, then do it."

I love all six Dune novels, but god-emperor is a bit harder to read.

Those KJA worked on are defnitely crap.

I pretty much agree with this.

The middle of the original six are harder going, but the final two are very good (With or without LSD). :D
