Yes, it's finally happened, our solar system is missing one of it's planets !?!  Pluto is no longer on the list !  Astronomers have decided to call Pluto a Dwarf Planet !?!?!  Is this a G/W Marketing scheme to up White Dwarf sales ?!  Or are the Borg or Romulans behind this !?!?!  Saints & Martyrs !!!   We was robbed !!!

Dwarf planet - homeworld for Squats? Maybe this proves that Tyranids really didn't eat 'em all up.  :D

But seriously... given that alternative, I would rather see Pluto declassified as a planet rather than labeling simlar sized asteroids as "planets", especially when there could be literally hundreds of these. Dwarf Plaent sounds like a reasonable name for this new category.

I think the whole thing is silly myself.

Dwarf Planet vs. what? Does that make Earth a Giant Planet? Or are we going to turn the planets into a McDonalds menu choice:

Dwarf, Small, Medium, or Large planet sir? Would you like to Supersize it up to a Gas Planet?

Silly.

It does seem foolish, however the longer I have been exposed to socalled serious scientests and the scientific community at large the less such things surprise me. When I was in school science was a passion and I believed great things would come of our scientests, I mean by that the worlds or mankinds scientists, but the more I learned about the scientific community the less I believed this. They bicker and endlessly debate miniscule points and theories and often spend more time cutting down colleagues stature or credentials then actually making discoverys or progress in their own right.

...Then again why would the world of science be any different from the rest of the world? :;):

So they have finally decided to call it a dwarf planet have they?  Last I heard they were going to call it a pultoid or plutonian planet, since pluto is the largest of these demi planets out there.

I remember when I was starting my astrophysics course at uni 6 years ago this subject was being debated.  At the time they decided to keep on calling pluto a planet so they wouldn't confuse everyone who had been brought up believing it was a planet.  Silly if you ask me.  They could of spent their time doing something useful, like disproving quantum.

Ah but the scientific process of debate and peer review is the best way human kind has yet found to actually make progress...

You may not love its style but really what else do you expect from 'chimpanzees 3.0?', which are ?99% genetically identical to chimpanzees 1.0 but featuring improved cortex size and opposable thumbs... ? :;): ?

Perhaps once we start putting a few more memory and logic chips in our brains the debates won't take so long. ?However as I don't expect any of the monkey craziness to be edited out ?(it's what makes us human) ?things could take even longer ?:p

I am in the scientific community so I do recognise what you are talking about - I just think it goes along with any human endeavour. At least in science there are significant checks and balances to the usual primate politics...

Also, remember you are communicating with us on a computer designed by the scientific community, and that in 18 months computers will be twice as powerful as they are now. Same for most other branches of progress and technology. ?If it works and we don't have a better alternative... lets go with it, or come up with the better alternative ? :)

Yes, it is silly, but Scientist are human too ! :D  May be they just wanted to generate a little interest and publicity for "Space ... the Final Frontier" ... :D  And just a side bar,  43% of all new technologies comes from the US, which is only 5% of the planet's population. I forget how much of the planet's resources the 5% uses but its HUGE !!  Nothing comes easy or cheap !  FRoA #13 Anything worth doing is worth doing for money. :D

I heard something about this a while back...but I thought they were leaning toward adding 3 or 4 more planets...I guess they didn't want to have to reprint all those textbooks. :p

Now, now guys - all they're doing is what we do when we discuss GW and Epic..... anyway, the Romans would not have know of Pluto - or Uranus or Neptune - so it all boils down to which textbooks you want to leave intact. Especially if you study in Latin  :p

Well, there are two kinds of scientists. The ones who actually do advance science and the ones whose job seems to be to invent the most obscure terms possible for new phenomenon and also to explain that phenomenon as complicatedly as possible, preferably using said terms. Most people who write the textbooks used in universities around the world seem to fall in te latter category.

My favorite comic strip of all time, Calvin and Hobbes, once had a very good commet on the subject. Suffice to say this strip found its way to the preface of my graduation thesis.

Calvin: "I used to hate writing assignments but now I enjoy them. I realised that the purpose of writing is to inflate weak ideas, obscure poor reasoning and inhibit clarity. With a little practice writing can become intimidating and impenetrable fog. Want to see my book report?"

Hobbes:"The dynamics of interbeing and monological imperatives in Dick and Jane. A study of psychic transrelational gender modes."

Calvin:"Academia, here I come!"

I love C & H
I've been really confused about this issue, it was said that it was changed from Full Planet to Dwarf because asteroids were a similar size, everything that's been mentioned so far is smaller so why not say 'anything smaller than Pluto is a ?' or are they waiting for/expecting a larger body to appear?
