I'm sure I read somewhere that GW was going to release the plastic sprues once more for Epic.. Does anyone have an update on that recently?

The next sprue due out is the chaos infantry one apparently.

And last I heard, Chaos was due out either in September or Febuary.

What about the old ones? Are they due to be released at all?  Ork, Eldar, Marine?

I know they have basic sprues for some of those, but I'd like to see the old type ones with a bit more variety on them. e.g. Space Marine Character sprue with all the different character models, scouts and terminators on it.  Epic40k era one I think it was?

I think it's unlikely we'll see the Epic40k era sprues for the currently-released armies again for the most part.

The reason being that with one box of four Epic40k Space Marine sprues, you would get almost everything you needed for a starter army.

- A detachment of Terminators.
- A detachment of Scouts.
- A detachment of bikes (3 bikes on each base)
- A detachment of Devestator Marines.
- Two detachments of Assault Marines.
- Three Tactical detachments.

Also, four each of these characters:

- Supreme Commander
- Chaplain
- Apothecary
- Standard Bearer
- Techmarine

and also sixteen Sergeants with Power fists!

Without any vehicles or character upgrades, you can get exactly 2000pts from those four sprues.

Throw in four Epic40k Marine vehicle sprues and you also get:

- 16 Rhinos
- 8 Land Raiders
- 8 Whirlwinds

As well as bringing enough transports to carry your entire army, that also brings your points total to 3400 points...

For eight plastic sprues...

Well I think they'd rather sell metal infantry and make 5x the money off us. :D

The Epic40k Ork sprues provide similar quandries, since they again come with a large selection of varied infantry types, and also there's one plastic Stomper on each sprue!

EDIT:

There's also the problem of some outdated designs appearing on some of the sprues. For example the plastic Marine Bikes, Land Raiders, Whirlwinds & Rhinos are all of the 'pre-heresy' design, which GW doesn't want to sell anymore.

Umm thought it would be something along those lines... Can't see it happening as such then. Pity that would have been really useful as a start pack for any army.

But it's so pretty... :(

I actually prefer the pre-heresy style models for the Land Raider and the Whirlwinds, though the new-style bikes are far superior to the Akeiramobiles.

I heard the same thing about the release date. I also heard that the Chaos infantry sprues will be re-releases of the ones from E40k.

I, too, prefer the old Land Raiders and Rhinos. I also prefer the AT era Whirlwinds.

I prefer the new style rhinos the best, chunky and intimidating looking, but the missile arrangement on the plastic whirlwind is my favourite.

That's it in a nutshell.  The old sprues were too good a value, and give GW too little opportunity to screw over the customer.

Umm.. pre-heresy? You mean RT age land raiders? And the whirlwinds with a box of missiles on top?

I can agree with the old whirlwind, but not on land raiders. New raider is so much better looking than that old "tracks go around the vehicle" type thing.

Aw... Don't like the old Half-Track style Land Raiders? Yeah, they looked really silly to me. They'd look far more at-home on a WWII battlefield then in a sci-fi environment... At least the new ones don't look like quite so much like German Halftracks with las-cannons instead of 8-pounders.
