I picked up this new book last weekend, as the adverts made it look interesting. Initially I was a little disappointed, as I was expecting more detail on the physiology of the alien species in 40K, and there is a story threaded through the book. Also, BL have fallen back on the terrible plan of using old photos and PhotoShopping them to look '40K' - which I think is really bad.

However, when you get into the book it is actually very interesting, and I actually recommend it! (And I almost never actually buy GW background books.) Many of the alien species are examined on the autopsy table, along with background. There are several versions on Tyranid construct, a Black Ork, a Kroot, a Tau Ethereal, an Eldar Exodite and others.

Some light is shed on the species. I wont give too much away unless people specifically ask for details, but it was uncovered that the diamond on the Tau Ethereals head is some kind of pheromone producer which it is theorised is what keeps the rest of the Tau in check for the Greater Good. It is also stated that the Ethereal has undergone rapid development, which shoots down my theory of the Ethereals being travellers fleeing the Tyranids and engineering the Tau.

There is also interesting insights into Ork reproduction (seriously!) and the Eldar actually look more alien than normal, which is a good thing. A few other races are presented such as the Thyrus and the Umbra (Warp denizens who are forced out of their home by the emergence of Daemons and are therefore attacking the source of the Warp invaders... creatures in this Universe such as humanity).

Generally, interesting. Does anyone else have this?

I don't have it either, but it sounds really cool. I'll consider picking up a copy.

Hi CS,

I haven't been too im[pressed with many of the latest background books... a lot of doctored photos and reprinted stories.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi!

I'm with Maksim on this. Its amazing how GW have been coasting on the same photos taken years ago.

I agree with this totally. I found many of the recent books to put me off because of the badly doctored photos and poor quality of layout and pictures in general.

This is not a perfect book. It is clear that the 'unknown' alien species are in there because GW cant let too much go about the standard races, but that readers expect something. There is a strange allusion to the Eldar Exodite carrying a Spirit Stone, which I take to be a simple error. And, as with most GW books, you do need to do a lot of reading between the lines to extract some of the most interesting points.

That said, I find it interesting as I am interested in the background and workings of the alien races. And, there is a Hrudd! (Which looks nothing like a Space Skaven!)

I do think that the climax and end of the book will be disappointing, but I got for a deeper insight into the aliens generally, so that doesnt bother me too much.

Reviews from others who have read would be interesting.

I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure all Craftworld Eldar and Exodite Eldar carry spirit stones to capture their soul should they die. The Craftworld Eldar release the spirit into the Infinity Circuit while the Exodites release theirs in the Worldstone of the settlement IIRC.

Hi CS,

Having said that I'm tired of GW refrying their hash doesn't mean I won't buy it when I get a chance...

Doh!

Seriously, the color background is nice, but it would be nicer if they invested a little more time and creative effort into the game.

Correct QuintAan - in one of the Epic SM supplements a bit of fluff pitting Chaos against the Eldar had a Keeper of Secrets eat the soulstone of a Banshee, resulting in her losing her life in the circuit. But it's a soulstone, not a spirit stone. I think...
