Yet again disaster strikes and my compyuter has screwed up.
Everything started out nice and well when suddenly I remembered: Today is February 16th and ther release date of the "Empire at War" pc game! I shut down the pc and hurried down to the store to secure myself a copy before the store closed.
With a big smile on my face I hurried back with my latest acquisition eager to install the game on the computer. When I entered the computer room I was greeted by the still running pc and a black screen with the text: "BIOS bad checksum". Not knowing half of what that means I thought I might as well try and restart the system but now nothing happens at all! I don't even get the BIOs boot screen! Sounds  bit like the mainboard is fried but I really really hope that my Hard disks are allright!
Does anyone know what to do in this sort of situation? (well except for crying and buying a new mainboard)

Anyway I can now only get on the net on the public library untill further notice...
...oh and the worst part: I don't get to play Empire at War!

You might try clearing the CMOS/BIOS.  Depending on the MOBO, there should be a jumper to clear it.  If you've got a manual for it, you should easily be able to find it:

Unplug the system, open it up, reset the clear CMOS jumper, wait about 30 seconds, put it back to original, plug in and start up.  If should go to defaults and get you back in if you got that checksum error earlier.

The "tougher" way to do it would be to unplug and then remove the CMOS battery (little disc battery), wait a while for it to clear, pop it back in, and try again.

Let me know if that works!

Prayers and a sacrifice to the Machine God?

You have my sympathy, Warmaster. It almost seems like our computers know when it would be the most annoying time to crash. I hope you had everything important saved externally.

Bad news.

This unfortunately indicates that your computer BIOS ROM chip and/or Motherboard is physically bad.

Hi!

I agree with this. This happened to my friends computer and only a new motherboard solved the issues.

Indeed, annoint with holy oils while reciting the sacred litanies of the adeptus mechanicus.

Alternatively you may need a new motherboard - like I did when it happened to me  :(

Is there a possibility that the BIOS battery being flat might cause that error? I had a BIOS problem that I managed to fix by buying a new battery. Having said that "BIOS bad checksum" sounds ominous.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll have to try out your suggestions first thing tomorrow. Hopefully that will solve the issues. Luckily i've backed up most of my stuff (a valuable lesson learned following the last major crash.) still theres some stuff made this week which I did't have time to  backup. *keeping fingers crossed*

Luckily the warranty for the board still hasnt expired so there should not be any unexpected financial sideeffects to this. Still it is annoying to wait for a replacement.

Thanks again for the advice. Unfortunately none of it seems to have solved the issue so it's probably a hardware failure. No worries as the warranty is stil valid so I've sent the board in for repair/replacement. IN the mean time I've managed to borrow some prehistoric laptop (I'm typing this using a hammer and chizzel you know) which at least allows me internet access.
