Hi Guys,

I admit that I'm not a big fan. I'm glad that HP is getting more children to read, but other than that, I find it amateurish literature and frankly not that imaginative. The great majority if not all of the themes are borrowed and the moralizing is sometimes far too transparent for my tastes.

I haven't found the movies all that great either and my sister and nephews like them quite a bit.

Its quite sad tha HP is what is "mainstreaming" the fantasy genre. While authors like Moorcock, Vance and others go unoticed.

Oh, come on.  To quote 'The Family Circus' a syndicated cartoon here in the States:  "Harry Potter must be a wizard.  He's distracted Bobby from Pokemon!" :p

Moralizing.  How about deciding, in plain English, 'If it's either HIM or ME, I will win', or 'I'm dropping out of school to go hunt down and kill the :cuss: who killed my family and has tried to kill me and my friends several times'

I don't find anything objectionable about Harry's morality.

I have no problem with any of it.

Of course we will find problems with it, and prefer other fnatasy genre authors, but it wasnt written for us. ?Its written for KIDS.

Anything to get kids back into imaginative thought and reading and not XBox and street violence genre is a good thing. ?If it leads them onto more thought provoking material later on, its a bonus. ?My kids have gone on to find out about hippogriffs, unicorns, fortune telling, witch hunts and all sorts of other stuff having been fired up by HP. ?How can I do anything but support them?

Its also shown them that life isnt all roses and getting everythign you want.  Sometimes it goes wrong and you have to show some resiliance and keep going.  That ties in well with their karate training too.

I tend to take that line generaly also, Tas.
The main objection that I have is that it is so badly written in places with most of the characterisation being of the 'cardboard' variety.

As I stated before, I'm glad to see something has led to more children reading. Even though I know that HP isn't the greatest writing, I've still enjoyed the series.

Dont get me wrong, its not Tolstoy or Tolkien, but its clear enough that an 8 year old understands the concepts first time and is inspired to keep reading through six books.

What I don't get is why many adults seem to like reading it too ??? Especially adult women in my experience. I have an acquaintance who is a fundamentalist pentecostal christian and she loves iit (despite being told it is evil in church :p ), and a relation who reads them as soon as they come out - and she is a Professor!! :O  

I guess the whole genre must just be completely novel and exciting to some people... ???  while at the same time possessing a certain level of social acceptance. Anyone else got a theory??

Oh and I agree with Tas's sentiments on the utility of these books... doesn't mattter that it doesn't do much for me - cos its great for the kids! :D
