Can anybody recommend some free (or very cheap) internet software to author my own basic HTML pages? My own stuff died (thus my oGRE opages are sadly out of date) and the kids want to do some basic stuff for a school project. Cheers! Tas |

First person to say "FrontPage" gets impaled on a regiment of WHFB4 plastic goblin spears. I use Visual Studio and Notepad, but they're both excessive in very different directions. Dreamweaver would be a good option, but isn't by any stretch of the imagination cheap. I think this is the cheap and cheerful HTML editor some of my workmates have suggested using: http://www.blumentals.net/htmlpad/ |

Try FrontPage... Now PitFiend will have to come to my house and while he is here giving me my new plastic spears we can play a few Epic Games. ![]() Oh how low I will go to get a game. ![]() dafrca |

California? That's a bit of a trek from England for a game. Still, FrontPage is evil and punishment must be administered... |

CoffeCup Free HTML (also known as HTML Express, IIRC) is a quickie. It's free and simple, the problem is that it isn't too powerful. What do I recommend is Notepad. Most of my actual site was coded with it. ![]() |

One of the most useful things an editor can do is to colour code the different parts of the code, as that makes it sooo much easier to spot invalid syntax. Which is where Notepad falls down. If you're on a Linux server, then SSH/Telnetting in and using Vi wouldn't be too horrendous an idea. Not one I'd use if i had the choice, but at least Vi understands the HTML syntax. I despise FrontPage for it's way of taking a perfectly good system (write your HTML, upload it through FTP and it works), and reworking it in a really ugly way that only works some of the time, and renaming things that have perfectly good names to ones that then just confuse people. WTF is a "web", when "site" is a perfectly good term? |
