Hmmmmm, never seen those ones before, does seem a reasonablr price for what you get, possibly a bit gimicky though.
However I'll let someone with more experience have the last word.

Well I'm still not a major authority in this area but just a few thoughts:

1: These hybrid machines are usually not very good at any of the things they can do compared to a dedicated unit at the same price. Of course everything depends on what you want: A camera, a videocam or an Mp3 Player.

2-3 Megapixels aren't very much today It can work for on screen purposes but for print and video it is pretty low.

You need a pretty big memory card for recording video (Onless you are recording at very low resolution and only want short clips worth a couple of minutes. I'm not sure if 256 mb is enough. I borrowed a friend's digital video camera and a movieclip at SVCD resolution was several Gigabytes for a half hour clip.

Another thing to consider is, that the camera probably doesn't have a Macro function for close ups of Epic minis. This wouldn't be so much a problem if you had more Megapixel so you could crop the images but 2 MP is a bit on the low side.

Personally I'd rather buy a dedicated unit. It should be possible to get a decent camera and a cheap mp3 player at that price. Many digitla cameras also have a video function for doing short clips (again the memory problem arises). However I may be overly pessimistic :;): :p

Cheers! :)

Hi!

I NEVER buy hybrid machines. It can do several things, but none particularly spectacularly.

I agree dedicated hardware, at least for me is better.

It is not a good deal. The Zoom function is only Digital, the high res is interpolation, The internal memory will not hold very many photos (maybe three or four) of the higher res.  It says "Close-up. 30 - 40 cm" so read 40cm.

This camera should cost about $50 or $60 USD at most.

As an example, here is one for a lower price from Fry's Electronics.

Fuji Camera

Note it has a Macro setting (for those Epic Minis), Optical Zoom: 3x

You will want to get one with a 64MB or 128MB card. Also as you look around, you will want to find the highest Megapixel you can find for your budget.

Optical Zoom is cleaner, and if you can, Micro Setting is nice.

Digital zoom is basically just a "zoom on the digital pic" similar to when you zoom in your photo editing program. You don't get more image information so in theory a strong digital zoom would only produce a pixelated image.

I agree that the ammount of Megapixels are very improtant. However it would also be a good idea to look at who's producing the optics in the camera. The optics of manufacturors such as Olympus, Canon, Agfa, Zeiss etc. are usually a guarantee of some degree of quality. Noname optics can be a bit of a gamble.

Depending on the type and manufacturor, memorycards don't have to cost a fortune. I agree that you'd probably want 128 mb or more so you don't have to upload pics to your comp all the time. (I use a 256 mb which willl usually store some 100 pics at a reasonable resolution.)

Cheers! :)

One major difference in the two is the interpolation software in the camera is very simple when compared to that found in, say Photoshop for example.

I own a Pentax Optio w/ 4MP and a 512MB card. It had both a Micro and Super Macro setting. I have had fun with it so far.

I would agree that generally, a higher megapixel, the better, BUT, it is not necessarily the better camera that has the higher MP number.  Read the reviews, particularly ones from mulitple sources.  Sometimes, a lower MP camera will outperform a higher MP one just because it is designed and built better.  I personally read PCmagazines reviews on cameras.....thinking about buying one myself.

the nunber of MP is not as important in many cases

some of my best pictures have been with a 3MP camera even though I have a 6MP camera

I'd agree with all the above - in fact, I settled for a camera with lower CCD size than the largest I could afford (mine is 4 Mpixel rather than 6) - however , it does have macro and 10x optical zoom, and that's what made the choice for me. It also has an optional pair of lenses, wide angle and telephoto, and a wide range of memory cards. Of course a single-lens reflex is much better (interchangeable lenses of any type) - but more expensive too. I used a lovely pair of Kodaks in my aerial remote sensing days: a DCS460 and a DCS660. When I took them to the aeroplane we were using for a set of flights, in order to see how we could mount them inside, I remember that the pilot commented that the two cameras together cost more than the aeroplane, a Tecnam P-92, itself!

But ?back to the problem at hand: I've taken a pic without macro - courtesy of Grandfather Nurgle himself. I might have approached just a little more - but not much - the camera was warning me I was just at the edge of focus range. A second pic (grandad again) of the same model. I can't add files here, so I'll use my yahoo folder. The pics are 20% of the original size, but show the difference clearly. I've not chopped off the shadow or anything, for comparison's sake. Oh, you'll understand which is which immediately. Here's the link

EDIT - the folder is obviously macro demo at the bottom; and the first pic gives an indication of my tastes in music - not quite Goffik Rokk!
