"It is with a great deal of sadness that I have to inform the community that we have decided to discontinue the development of Warhammer Online and will be closing down this website with immediate effect.
This has been a difficult and painful decision but it was taken following a following a full review of the progress of the game, costs to date and future costs of the project. As a result both Games Workshop and Climax Development Limited, the computer games developer, have agreed to terminate the development project.
I would like to say a personal thanks to all of the people who have followed our development over the last few years, your constant support and enthusiasm has meant a great deal to us.
Robin Dews"

*Tries to act suprised but fails miserably*
That is a massive shame, but it does seem to be the cycle of things whenever GW makes a move into such ventures that actually looks like it will be any good.

Interesting development. I was not following this so I did not know it was in trouble.
Was this unexpected, or was there obvious issues?

Hmm....whatever the problem was (probably finiancial) Gw was keeping it from everyone, probably even the development team. How do I know this? I get 3 different PC Gaming magazines, and all of them had articles on the game. All this being said, the state of the online gaming business is in flux, with a number of them slated to come out this year. So it is possible that GW looked at the numbers, applied its standard marketing philosophy (ie, if it wont make 'x' amount of dollars, then no go) and canned the game. Shame tho, I think that it would have been a hit, with a instant intrest base from WHFB players anyway.

Yeah, but you can possibly add New customers in the form of people who would never buy the tabletop game, but might after they play the online game, even if just for the pretty models.

After looking at this again, the probable scenario is that the developer told GW that 'hey, its going to cost us X amount of cash to launch, and X amount of cash to run this thing for a bit, before we start seeing significant income' And GW, being who they are, said 'huh? we thought this was a cash cow!! No Way! End of story. Just speculation, but probably how it went.

Marketing departments are run by weasels and HR deparments by sadists; the trolls are in the accounting. Just ask Dilbert...

I have to admit I am not surprised.
Everything I read about it, implied it was going to cost a fortune and wouldn't bring in any real hard revenue.
On top of that, I doubt GW could have afforded to market it "correctly" in the video games market and it would have died a death against still competition.

Video games are horrendously expensive to develop compared to GW's usual fare. I'm surprised we've seen as many GW-based games as we already have, though presumably most of them were merely licensed. (Hugs his copy of Final Liberation.)
