Hi! I'm waxing nostalgic today (that and I actually got a light workload today after a killer week) and I was remembering how I came into contact with epic and became an epic nut. It may come to as a shock, but my first contact was 40k, not epic. I bought those legendary realms of chaos books many moons ago and actually bought quite heavily into 40k rogue trader. I though it was exciting to be able to do sci-fi combat in this wierd 40k world. I only wished the conflicts could be more grandiose with bunches of tanks and infantry. A short time later AT came out. While only giant robots at the time the hint (and later additions) of infantry and tanks really appealed to me. So much so that in ONE day I sold off ALL my 40k stuff and have never looked back. Even though initially there wasn't much of an epic player base, I slowly converted a group of people and played many games on my fathers pool table (which makes a great battlefield!). The golden age began when I open the miniatures retail store. We played and we played! The best run was two weeks at christmas when we put in close to 50 games! We had so many as 3 running at a time on all our tables. Lots of fun! The rest is history. So while I dont like 40k, I can knock it too hard. Without it I would have never came into contact with epic and become a epic nut. Whats your story? Primarch |

I started with D&D fantasy figures and Starfleet Battles in the late 1970s. I later moved on to Battletech and other similar games. Adeptus titanicus was my first exposure to the GW-verse and I liked it. I never played the larger scales although I did like Man O'War and a few of the other games including Talisman. I stayed with Epic and seeing the craziness of the latest 28mm 40k "mainstream" games, I'm glad I satyed with happy little Epic. Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. |

Like Primarch's, my first contact was Rogue Trader. At the time I was 13 or 14; I can't quite remember. It was quite a long while until I took up Epic, however, as I was 17 when I picked up 1st edition Space Marine and decided to start IG army. The rest is history, as they say. SM2 soon followed, then I joined the Net Epic team at the time the mailing list was just a collection of email addresses. Ahh, the memories... ![]() |

I was drooling over thge idea of Wh40k and could not afford it at the time... for quite a few years since 2nd edition. Then, I started to collect Battletech and then began buying White Dwarf regularly. Once, I was surfing over the GWUK website, when I noticed the EA playtest recruitment notice. "Whoa? Rules for free?" I thought, and entered without second thought... As they say, rest is history. |

Picked up a copy of SM1 a few months before I got out of the Army in '90. Being a civilian, I had more time to myself ... and the rest is history ! ![]() |

I started gaming back in 1982 or thereabouts (I am excluding the stuff I use to do with 1/32nd scale plastic matchbox infantry and Britains guns which fired matchsticks (Little Wars anyone) when I was about eight). One product that does stick in my minds from this period was a Matchbox (AMT) 1/32nd scale boxed set comprising, a card base, a ruined French caf?/village, a watchtower, some German soldiers, some Americans and a M8 Greyhound with an air driven missile launcher. The caf? was designed to fall apart if it was hit! In 1982 I started to play 25mm Napolenics - had some interesting Prussian Highlanders at this point. After a few years of that I did some 1/300th World War Two microarmour (British force) and the one time my Cromwells decided to drive through a river (and sank) still haunts me to this day.... One day my gaming group had just bought a new game, called Warhammer, and tried it and it seemed fun... I originally bought a Dwarf army, but eventually switched to Orcs, building up a nice little army complete with lots of Goblins, lesser Goblins and the odd Pygmy or three. Bought Rogue Trader (Warhammer 40K First Edition) when it came out, and had an Ork force and some Space Marines. During that time bought loads of other games (esp boardgames such as Block Mania, Mighty Empires and so on...). In the early 1990s I didn't buy Adeptus Titanicus as I didn't like the idea of large robot games, but did buy Space Marine, hated the rule, but loved the miniatures, so I used a slimmed down version of Dirtside instead. It was about this time that I decided I didn't like the way GW were heading and started to ignore them (except the odd game of Man o War) and got into more types of gaming including 15mm Operation Sealion and Moderns, Flintloque, and putting on the odd display game here and there. I put on developed and ran a range of participation games at various shows across the country, and my personal favourite was a Star Trek variation of Full Thrust. I didn't buy Epic40K when it came out, but my mate Simon did so and said it was a good system.... I did buy it (with a load of miniatures) in the half price sale they had in February (98 I think) and bought more stuff when a local games shop closed down - since then it has been my favourite and most played game. I bought Warmaster when it came out and am still painting models. I have Warhammer 40K and have painted up an Ork force, as my mate Simon bought me some minis for my birthday... the rest as they say is propoganda... |

I had been buying White Dwarf for quite a while. Then one day they had an ad for a new game they were going to have soon. Rogue Trader. Loved the idea of Orcs in Space fighting Power Armored Guys. The images were very powerful. I pre-ordered Rogue Trader and bought a box of the beakies when they came out. Funny thing is, I did a pass on AT. Did not have a desire to play the "Giant Robot Game". Then one day, I walked in and they had Space Marine out and open. Showed us the tiny little Space Marines. Bought a total of four boxes between us (my group). Played for a long time. Between me and two friends we bought more of the Epic stuff then I would care to admit. Sad thing was the group of players in the area were a bunch of fanboy rules lawyers. Just before E40K came out I became burned out on all the fighting. Sold all my 40K and Epic off. Walked away from the whole GW Fanboy BS. Then one day, a friend who knew I loved Epic back in the day told me that Jervis was going to redo it under the specialist banner. He got me to "apply" to the playtest. I can not begin to tell you how sad I am I did not kep all my old stuff. Sometimes I cry at how much I "lost" when I sold off. Well I am back and in again. Guess once bitten you can't shake it. ? ![]() dafrca |

YOU GUYS, YOU!! ITS ALL YOUR FAULT!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() Hehe, in part this is true, but on part is because I like big (tank) formations (you have seen my crazyness working up a fUll regimental organization (should have been reading about the mercosur and the FTAA instead...). 40k is nice because 1:35 scale tanks look awesome to me, specially real tanks, not the MarkI models GW produces, even if I somehow like those as well. Still, it doesn't really work for me smoothly. Fantasy is a better option. I have always liked it, and was what first introduced me to the hobby. I have a seizable HE force, around 12k points strong. The curious thing is that I used to havea much larger force but sold all of it out and started from scratch again a few years ago. More tactical than 40k. Still not completely "accurate". Sadly the larger scale for fantasy (Warmaster) is poop incarnated. Tested it twice. Got a unit of cavalry charging 150 cm in a turn. Decided it was really bad and gave up. DBM woyld do for me I guess but what I have seen is not really tactical either from the way it is played around here. So there we go. I entyered the hobby through fantasdy, moved to 1:35 tank models and then started looking at the tank formations of epic. There we go ![]() Regards, Xavi |

Where to start? I guess I started with D&D, and then moved on to a large variety of roleplay games, from Aliens to TMNT and most things in between. I picked up Rogue Trader and liked what I read, the background and variety being a real draw. I played Genestealer Cults, and a variety of other forces including Marines and Eldar in that, and also got heavily into Space Hulk at the time. Then my regular opponent (Gaunts Ghost) picked up Space Marine first edition, and I soon followed and got a set myself. I then expand and retrospectively found AT. When Space Marine 2nd edition came around, I had become disillusioned with GW, and I hated what I read about the game and the minis, and got out of wargaming mostly (this was also roughly the time of 40K 2nd). I got the occassional WD mag, and then G/G again picked up Epic third edition and I started again, along with Battlefleet Gothic (preceeded by Space Fleet and the WD rules that preceeded even that). I am very glad that I have never really got rid of anything from my past wargaming days, and I constantly find bits from the past (recently I discovered some old GW Snakemen minis!). Now I may complete the circle as I am considering actually getting the new 40K rules. |

Funny, I do not regret selling off my 40k nor do I miss the long "games" where we spent more time arguing about the rules then playing the rules. dafrca |
