Well, looks like I'm gonna get a brand new PC in a month or so, and, as I was kind of out of the hardware arms race for many, many years (if I ever was in it), I need to ask you folk for some advice on the params.

It must be something that will be as durable as possible, cause it might be possible it'll have to stand 5 or 6 years without upgrades.

As for playing games, I have tons of stuff that won't run on my current poo-PC, just because of these 100 Mhz or 32 MB RAM less then needed.

Hi!

Several questions you need to ask yourself:

1. Size of you budget
2. PC or MAC?
3. AMD processsor or Intel?

Once I know these I can make recommendations. I have upgraded intensely in the last year and have sought lots of information on motherboards, processors, video and audio cards.

Let me know.

1. Size... er, slightly under 750$
2. PC. Definitely.
3. What's the difference?

The difference is usually the price, and AMD processors usually run a little better than they are quoted at.

Try ebuyer for prices for parts, that is if you want to assemble it for yourself. They have offices in the US, so postage shouldn't be a problem.

No mail-ordering components, I'm afraid. Not here in Poland. Too many valuable things never make it past the customs...

Then, I would say, the pertinent question is what can you actually get locally?

Hi!

If you cant mai order thats a problem. Iblisdrax question is valid. AMD processor are much cheaper than Intel and are good for home built systems.

Your 750 includes a monitor? If so then its less money for the actual computer. If not then you can get quite a good system.

Let me know what you can get locally and I'll give you an analysis of the choices.

if you can get there you may find that you can get what you want cheaply in Germany (one of the advantages of the free market in the EU) and customs should not bother you on your way back.

Germany is also right out.

And this 750 is rather without counting the monitor.

@iblis, the components avaible locally includes a quite large array, and though it might not include the newest top-selling super-components, it should be fairly enough to fulfill whatever you advise.
