I think one of GW's strengths is the artwork they produce. My favourite piece would have to be the new style Warlord Titan striding past a rocky outcrop. I think this is the picture that graced the front of the Titan II graphic novel, but I'm not too sure. I like it because I think it manages to convey both scale and movement really well.
So, what is your favourite piece (from any games system) and why?

I really like the Crimson Fists on the cover of the original RT book. There is so much packed in that picture, and it really gets across the desperate nature of the game.

Old John Blanche stuff is great- the huge, super-detailed stuff is the best, things the stuff in the first few pages of the 40k rulebook, and an old black&white piece of a huge epic-style battle taking place, with lines of artillery, infantry, and titans in the background. Adrian Smith's Chaos WHFB army book cover is great too, as well as most of the stuff that Karl Kopinski has been doing recently too...

I must admit I hate JB's work, especially his colour work. Each to his own I think the BFG game would have looked a lot better with the CGI ship that was one of the WD front covers. If I had to go for a 'classic' GW artist, I'd go for Mark Gibbons.

i really liked the front cover of the BFG book too(i say this because it looks computer generated which makes it somewhat related to the last post because of BFG and computers... w00t.).

Hi!
I liked the artwork on the original cover of the epic space marine 1st edition boxed set.
When I think of marines I still think about that box cover.

I don't think I've seen that one, at least in that context anyway.

Yes, I have 2 of the SM1 boxes (I store some of my SMs in there !) and a poster on my War Room wall of that painting ! A very good piece of work ! But I also thought the SM box for the first 40K plastic Marines, that C/S mentioned (I still have that too) is very well done, we call it "Crimsons' Last Stand" !

Hi!
I remember that one its pretty good too.
Another one I like is from the old SM 1st edition rulebook where ultramarines are advancing and a warhound gets blown up by a loyalist warlord.
Then again most AT era drawings kick butt!

As far as artists go Mark Gibbons is my favorite although David Gallagher's color art is awesome; I must admit liking his reproduction of the original RT cover. It is a nice acknowledgement of the past.
If I have to pick a single picture I like most I'm afraid I can't do that, but there are two pics I like above all others.
The first one is Jes Goodwin's pic of a Blood Angel marine in page 8 of the 1st edition Space Marine rulebook. That's what _I_ think marines should still look like. I absolutely hate the new "Pig's Head" helmet.
The other would be in page 6 of the 1st edition Codex Titanicus. It's the one where three Orks huddle in a foxhole. One, obviously the boss, is grinning evilly while surveying the battlefield in front of him with binoculars, while the two others look VERY concerned and are looking the other way...from where several Warlord Titans are advancing upon them. ? The picture was done by Paul Bonner and I'd pay to get a poster-sized one to put on my wall.

..Yeah, Mark Gibbons produced some great stuff- the Eldar Avatar picture from the 2nd Edition Codex Eldar is particually cool, and I just rembered the JB picture of an Imperial Reaver taking on a huge Chaos Warlord - superb...

A lot of the artwork in the original SM1 book was very cool. For some reason, this discussion has reminded me of a small picture from the book with a squad of Marines taking cover in rubble while the Launcher aims. I cant remember much about this picture, except that it was a line drawing in b&w, but it was cool.

Hi!
I think black and white pictures capture the "gothic", "scary" feel to the 40k universe than color stuff, it looks cartoony in color.
In B/W Orks look fearsome, in color they remind me of bozo the clown. Funny how color or lack of it can change ones impression.
