Hi!

I've played about 900 hours worth, according to steam. But never a multiplayer game.

They tell me the strategies involved are quite different than against the AI.

Good luck in finding a game of supportive players. A lot of "jerks" flock to online matches.

Depends. I do like Civ5 a lot but I'm not a great player. Meaning I beat prince but have trouble with king.

Hi!

I beat it at deity once, to get the achievement, but I consider it too contrived to play it on a regular basis (exploiting the AI's weaknesses).

I mainly play at Emperor, where its challenging, but I don't have to recur to AI exploits to win. ;)

Got tired of it though. I'm enjoying Divinity: Original Sin for the moment.

I have no idea how you people play on those difficulties. I'm content to play Warlord, or the occasional Prince game. >_>

Practice. ;)

Of course, in the basic game, China is decidedly overpowered.

If you learn how to exploit that particular nations forte, you'll beat higher difficulties quite easily. ;)

I'm out, then. I hae beaten king twice, lost once and one game is sitll unfinished as I got tired. With Emperor I'd lose before I even started.

Of course, I never quite liked the "specialized cities" idea required to make it in the higher levels; somehow I enjoy the game more when I build a somewhat viable infrastructure in each city.

I play the same way, which is why I enjoy king the most. The higher levels are just one exploit on top of another.

In the vanilla game it starts with playing china. Due mainly of it unique building, which gives science AND gold. A very overpowered combination.

Add to this that China gets more frequent and better generals, you can spam powerful armies led by them and use the excess to power golden ages.

By the late ancient age, I'm the clear front runner in tech and cash due to this. I am usually the first to get to the medieval age.

It's even worse with the expansion since Babylon is way overpowered due to its abilities.

One way to exploit the AI is to make deals with them for cash or other resources and turn around and declare war. This not only makes your treasury greater, but severely handicaps the AI since it now has no gold to face you in war or rush by units (which it loves to do). I constantly check other civs for how much money they have early on, drain them and then take them out.

The second AI exploit are research agreements. The AI simply cannot use them effectively. Make them with civs less advanced than you, which will boost your tech advances and they won't compete with you. On king I can reach the industrial age before the others get out of the medieval ages using RA's.

Those are the main ones, there are a ton of smaller ones. I confess playing with the exploits gets boring real quick. That is why I prefer lower levels of difficulty and use none of them. :)
