Hi, I've bought a few apps for the iPad recently and wanted to recommend them to the community mostly because I think many here might enjoy what is on offer. I also thought others might want to share their recommendations or even cautionary tales about apps which they feel they have some reservations about. So, without further ado... |

Forest of Doom by Tin Man Games. If you were a fan of Fighting Fantasy books back in the day and you fancy a bit of nostalgia, my advice is simple: buy this! If you aren't familiar with the books, or still aren't convinced, read on hardy adventurer... This is the Forest of Doom game that you know and love but with bells and whistles! The gameplay is enhanced by the fact that you don't need to keep any of the notes and the game system calculates all of the damage for you. The dice rolling engine is nicely realised, simple but effective. The adventure sheet also keeps notes of all the items you have and use so all the scribbling is a thing of the past! The classic art is all there and you can choose to view it in b&w or the new colour versions which are nicely done. Oh, and did I mention there is a map?! This is great for helping you keep your bearings and trying to play the mission in different ways. A fantastic addition! On top of the actual game which was a joy to relive are the addition of achievements, an interesting "making of" article by Ian Livingstone (caution: complete the game first as this contains spoilers) and a "history of Fighting Fantasy" which was informative also. My one complaint is a problem that exists with the original book: there are certain places and things that you have to do to complete the mission which means there is virtually only one way to complete the quest successfully! However, this does encourage repeat plays and along with the achievements you'll want to fully explore the Forest of Doom! Fantastic buy, beautifully enhanced and realised on the iPad by Tin Man Games. Highly recommended! I can't wait to try more of these books! |

Judge Dredd: Countdown Sector 106 by Tinman Games Not Fighting Fantasy system but something very similar and still uses the "go to section xx if you want to do..." system as is standard with gamebooks. As it's Tinman Games again the design is slick and the dice rolling smooth. I'm not as mad on the combat system compared to FF, mainly because if you get some bad rolls you can lose a lot of health in the one go. The flip side of that though is that you can do a the perps a serious disservice when the rolls go your way! The illustrations are ok but not up to the usual standard of the art in 2000AD, bit of a shame that they didn't use a regular Dredd artist. The a Dredd voice effects are a bit ropey and unfortunately the music while good is not long enough and becomes repetitive. However, it's a really fun experience and if you are a Judge Dredd fan (as I am) you'll enjoy how well the madness of Mega-City One has been captured! That's one plus after a series of minor criticisms but it is a big, BIG positive which meant I thought it was a great experience! Get it! |

Ascension and Nightfall are pretty good as card games go, Threes is a nice little time waster. Don't buy any extra content for Ascension, though, their servers are being turned off later thie year. |

I also like SpaceHulk, looks and plays really well, though the longevity of the game is short. Worms, for a bit of good humoured destruction. Risk, though only against real players, the iPad ones aren't that strong. |

Chainsaw Warrior by Auroch Digital A faithful port of the old GW game (for those that have long memories!). I can't review this any better than this; http://ipadboardgames.org/2013/chainsaw-warrior/ But I would mention that I miss the original art of Brett Ewins & co, although the art on display is nice and looks very similar. It's just because I'm a 2000AD fan! For reasons of nostalgia I went on YouTube to see the old board game. The video is unintentionally amusing; http://youtu.be/Jox9fi4F4L8 My favourite line is: "We are now stronger. We are on drugs"! ![]() |

Ticket to ride (plus expansions). Don't get the ipad version though - buy the iphone version. This game has absolutely no need for great graphics and the iphone and ipad version essentially differ just on this - and the fact that the ipad version is about three times the cost. |

Titan HD by Valley Games for iPad https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/titan-h ... 26817?mt=8 This game is great fun. I play it every day (nickname daddaminoo). While it is possible to learn it against AI, the game really shines in online multiplayer mode. The game is simple (once you understand it), but surprisingly deep, and as a result, the top of the leader board is still improving their game. You run around with legion stacks and recruit monsters through a ladder system. 2 of this can muster a stronger creature. 2 of the stronger creature can muster an even stronger one. There is a cap for stack size, forcing you to split or stop improving. You fight for board control, but most importantly. Every player has a Titan. If you lose your Titan, you are out. Last Titan wins. Titans get stronger as you win battles. Battles are fought out as a mini table top game. Your creatures has move and strength. The use of terrain is critical. Try it, you might like it. /Fredmans |

Though you can play vs steam players on the ipad version and not the iphone... if you have pc only friends. |

Never knew that - but you can play against your worldwide mates wherever they are via the game centre. One other plus point for the pocket (iphone) version is that it now has asynchronous multi-play - basically mean you can play up to 4 simultaneous, different games against other players, without having to be always online, or even have the app open all the time. |
