This is a hex and counter game by Lock N' Load Publishing and adapted from Two Hour Wargames game of the same name. The box is nice and sturdy and colorful with a high gloss finish, it gives you a good idea of what you will inside. First impression when you open the box is outstanding; lots of stuff and everything is high quality materials.

The rules are pretty short and formatted in numeric entries, so it is easy to locate any rule you may need. But play is pretty easy and based very closely to the miniatures version of ATZ. The same reaction system is used for game play but they do skip one step in zombie elimination; a hit is a kill (not so in the miniatures version). But to make up for that is the zombie attraction from noise is high (same as urban setting in miniatures).

Instead of generic player pieces, they have special characters each with their own unique stats and skills. But these stats decrease to a lower level after taking so much wounds, this again is different for each player.

There is a campaign of scenarios to play but you can easily devise your own or just throw down some pieces and let the system progress as it does. The game is easily a good candidate for solo play, but I am not a fan of solo play anyway.

Equipment and weapons can be selected/purchased or found during the game. Weapon selections are pistol, 2x pistols, SMG, assault rifle, crossbow, hunting rifle, and hand grenade! Unlike the miniatures version that only list flash-bangs, this version has fragmentation grenades. There are also counters for equipment and just about anything else you will need; drugs, body armor, bats, ammo, scopes, etc...

The game comes with 2 map boards that are double sided, giving you a total of 4 maps. The hexes are numbered and have a center LOS dot. These again are very nice constructions with great artwork. They could easily be used in Advanced Squad Leader, any ASL player will feel right at home with these maps. I actually got 2 boxes, so I have double the counters, maps, etc...

Every time you enter a building, you must first check for zombies/survivors (they may be hostile) and after that is resolved you may search to look for loot. Both of these processes are easily handled by a deck of cards. These are easily usable in the miniatures game also.

Overall I am very pleased with the game and looking forward to playing. A+ rating!

It is spreading like a zombie sickness, oh wait... LOL

My only complaints on the game is that the equipment/weapons lack flamethrowers and chainsaws! I plan on making some custom counters though for those, also maybe creating some new character counters with the actual pictures of those playing the game!

Some have complained about the game for the stacking rules: zombies can stack unlimited on a square while characters may not stack at all. This seems like an easy fix though with a house rule as to whatever the group prefers.

I was hoping that you were joking here, seems not … wow, not impressed. I don't have anything against zombies in general, just gratuitous stupidity :-\

I'm all finished painting a batch from Rebel Minis: 12 containment suit troopers (looks like MOPP 4 so that is what I painted them as); 12 SF troops (went in desert colors); 66 modern urban zombies! These are supposed to be 15mm but honestly they are 10mm in my opinion (none are over 10mm from base to top of head). But they look good together and will go easy with most matchbox style vehicles, I don't think 15mm building will be stretch for them either. Just waiting on some Wonder Wash to finish them up and then basing.

That's because you never know when your 'buddies' will start drooling and carrying on. It's a new twist to the old saying: friends close, enemies closer.

I ran through a quick solo-play game last night to test the rules out. I already play the miniature version of ATZ. Zeds spawn easier and die easier in the board game. The solo game was quickly on the way to a loss when in no time at all I ended up with a large gaggle of zeds on table and only one survivor with a single pistol left. The game only started with two survivors each with pistol, the objective was to search and find more weapons. Best I came up with was a bat.

You definitely need a team to accomplish much and entering unknown structures should be conducted with caution and over-lapping fire.
