I recently picked up the Warmaster book. Now, I doubt that I will ever play a real game, but it is a nice book. Anyway, if I did ever decide to pick up a few minis, I would want them to form the basis of an army.

So, what do army do you think works well? I am looking for advice in two areas:

Minis - which force has the best range in minis, here I am looking for the way that an entire force looks on the battlefield rather than the specific detail of individual minis.

Armies - which force has a lot of flexibility. I am looking for a force which will let me play a large number of games, with exactly the same troops, and still give me the choice to how to play it and make each game different. I am not so interested in a force such as Chaos which seems to involve getting the Chaos Knights in and winding up the game.

I have always been a huge fan of the Dark Elves, and so I will probably collect these. What force, preferably from the main rule book (I find these to be the most balanced in general) but not necessarily, would be a good counterpoint/opposition/change of style to the Dark Elves?

Also, any comments about the game? Thanks.

EDIT: To narrow it down a bit, the armies that seem interesting include (in some order of interest) Dark Elves, Lizardmen, Orcs, Skaven, Dwarves, Empire

My personal preference has been for the Orcs and Lizardman, but that preference is based on the models.

I am actually (at some point) making a pure Goblin army, as it will be fun... tempted to take it to a Warmaster Tournament just for fun as well!

I am gravitating towards Dark Elves and Lizardmen, which is a departure from my original thoughts of Orcs and Skaven!  :{

The only problem is that neither of these forces are from the original rule book. Does nayone have any comments about Dwarves, as they seem interesting?

I don't play W/M, but I think their new Chaos Demons look interesting ...  May have some use in Epic ?    ???

Well, you objected, but it sounds as if Chaos fits all your requirements.

Chaos already has a large range, and will soon have a huge range once the Tzeentch and Nurgle minis previewed on the SG site get into production.  They have few minimum number restrictions (1 each marauders and warriors, iirc), meaning you can customize your force more.  They have high-point units, which means for the same monetary cost as another army, you can use your minis for greater variety in force composition.

The old epic metal daemons are in scale if you want to field them.  That's a nice bonus.  I especially think the epic fleshhounds are better than the warmaster versions.  For that matter, a bit of putty and wire and you could make your own Screamers, too.

I would think that a chaos (bruiser, hth mostly) army would contrast very nicely with the dark elf (finesse and missile fire).  And if/when the Slaanesh forces come out, dark elf infantry and cav would make good proxy models for chaos warriors and knights for a truly huge army, whould you want to field it.

Finally, chaos has been out since the beginning, so they are probably going to be easier to locate second-hand, at least for the core units.

Hi!

CS it seems you and I have the same "thing" about warmaster. I have all the books and magazines, but have procrastinated excessively about getting the figures, much more so now that their prices went up.

I'd throw another vote for chaos.

Hell guys, now you are adding to list instead of helping me pick!  :D

I looked at the minis online, and now I am even more sure that I like the Dark Elves. The trouble is that I am not sure about the Lizardmen minis, and I am swinging back to the Skaven as contrast. I will add Chaos to the list, but the problem is that while I like the characters and daemons, I dont much care for the minis for the Marauders or Warriors - and I always judge an army on its core troops. For my other force, I want a swarm close combat force.

Still, I really like the Orcs too, but they seem very common. Anyone know anything about the Skaven list, or whether there is a Tomb Kings list - which would be cool.

Go for Dark Elves then for sure.

For the second army, the skavens contrast nicely with them if you want to use those. On the other hand, if you want to use chaos as a counter point, making a chaos army with imperial High Elf, or Bretonian minis is one of the easiest things to do ever. You have more or less the same troops ranges that can proxy. Make a corrupt army and that's all if you don'0t like the chaos non-demon minis :)

So I advise to make the DE for sure, but about the second army I still add chaos to the list. And in doing so force you to look at the other army ranges as well :D lol

Xavi

On a side note, does anyone know if the Annual 2002 is still available anywhere? I picked up the mainbook and the Annual 2003 is available, readily, but apparently 2002 has more and better stuff.

At any rate, my suggestion would be Dark Elves & High Elves but that's just from a background perespective, and it's what I plan to do if I can find some 2nd. hand minis. Or Orcs/Dwarves, Lizardmen/Chaos.

Also, if you're not set on GW figs, Pendraken makes a nice enough line of 10mm figs, and I'm sure there's others.

Hey Cyber, I just picked up the rulebook too! I won it on Ebay for a stunning $2.25. I still can't believe it.

As for my take on the game, I really thought about collecting an Empire and an Orc army, but after reading through the rulebook, I am not sure I like the game. . .

Am I right to assume that a unit of infantry cannot attack a character, even one mounted on a Wyvern or something?

And I also don't understand how characters, even on foot, move 60cm while calvary move 40cm.

I am sure it all has it's reasons, but it is still a weird game. I don't expect that I'll ever invest much into it.

BTW, Dark Elves rule. So do Dark Eldar.
