I have heard of people who range from "The Game is just an excuse so I can paint" to "I play unpainted armies because I hate it so much".
Where are you? Do you like to paint?
If not, do you trade for painting, pay someone, or play with unpainted metal?

I dont thik I have to say that I enjoy painting.
However, it was rather forced on me. Up until about 3 Years ago (not long before I started epic40k.com), I just collected and played & didnt care for painting. For epic it was mostly a case of splatter it in one colour, and a shoulder pad colour if my marines were lucky. I never paid anyone to paint for me though, "why waste money that could be spent expanding armies?!?!?!?" was my attitude.
But over time I ran out of opponents and started spending more time in hospital & away from gamers, so I decided to use the time to try and make miniatures look good rather than just simply make them game worthy.
3 Years on and I'm paiting 2-300 figures a month.....
Ironicly, I'm now closer to the idea of paying someone else to paint for me than I've ever been before - I dont get time for my own miniatures!

I enjoy painting and modelling, primarily for the real feeling of satisfaction that results in a great piece, or a really nice looking army... I am a little lazy however, and have to make myself sit down to paint, even tho I know I'll enjoy it....

Hi!
I absolutely HATE, LOATHE, DESPISE and otherwise makes me physically ill to paint. A little on the dramatical side, but you get the message.
I love the "game" aspect of the hobby. The rules, the strategy (or lack of it), the mental sparing with another player. I live for it. Sitting down, usually alone, to paint something is not in my nature as I cant justify the time spent on it. I have little time, like many here, and choosing between painting and playing is a no brainer for me.
Having said all this, yes I like to have my minis painted and presentable, so once I found out I can get a good paint job for a good price, painting no longer worries me.
I just can get enthusiastic about painting, but DO apprecaite those who are good at it and enjoy it. I wish I could too.

I really dig painting. Although, the repetative aspects of painting a whole army can get to be a chore. I prefer painting terrain. It tends to break up the monotony.

I'm with Tuffskull. I like painting, but doing it over and over again can be a chore.
The real pleasure is either using it or in having it admired by others.

This is a really good question. I like to paint, except for two things. Firstly, I just dont get the time to sit down and get enough done, there is always something else that needs to be done. And secondly, I am a perfectionist, and so I tend to spend way too long on minis that never quite end up as good as I imagined them looking.
Still, while I cant find much time for painting, I still do more than gaming! Really, I live for rules and the paperwork involved and the background. A little escapism is exactly what I need regularly.

Quote (CyberShadow @ 25 2003 June,07:57) | I tend to spend way too long on minis that never quite end up as good as I imagined them looking. | This is exactly my problem. I will not paint anything for ages, then get inspired, break out the brushes and go for it. Then I will get frustrated that its not as good as I had hoped, or doent quite look how I wanted, and lose interest again...

Hi!
When I used to paint (long time ago in a galaxy far, far away), I painted to a "functional" level. Meaning that they looked good "en masse", as epic armies should, but weren't "golden demon" quality.
I think you should be realistic in you painting aprroach. They pieces, after all, are used for gaming and are "manhandled to a degree" is it really worth painting things to such a high standard to have it chip and fade through use? This happended to me and the "retouching" was painful and long.
Once I photograph all my stuff again, I'll post some pictures to let you see what I mean. Also, while being creative is fun, I just painted everything the same what the color inserts that came with later epic blisters showed. Not original, but it gave my minis a clean good look.
In the end, if you paint at all, paint for yourself and your tastes.
You can't please everyone all the time (and it isn't fun to try either).

Words of wisdom Primarch. In the end, I spray-painted my entire Dark Angels army green en mass and then flocked the infantry. Ostensibly this was to get ready for a "big game" one week, but its only now 10+ years later that I am actually bothering the go back and revisit them as time allows.
Its only the command and special type stands that get particular attention nowadays. The rest only have to look OK from a distance of about 1metre- standard gaming range.
The disspointment I have is that I play with some top painters and in comparison my painting is rubbish. Not that that helps my opponents with the tactical ability and I find it smugly satisfying when my spray green DA slaughter the beautifully highlighted Aspect Warriors of my enemy. Juvenile and sad maybe, but satisfying!

I figure I should answer my own question
I do not mind painting, but it is not the part of the Hobby I like. I see painting as a chore I must do to play with a painted army.
If I could afford to, I would pay someone to paint up my whole army. That way, they would all look alike in both colors and style

I echo CyberShadow - I like to do it, I try to do it to a high (?) standard, but life keeps getting in the way. I too like read rules & "fluff" and work on our "hybrid" rules & TO&Es. And rarely have time to game. But I always have models I'm working on ... no matter how long it takes !!! Still working on E40K Orks, Exodites, Titans, F/W, terrain, 'Nids, etc., etc., ...

I suppose I should add that I'm also into the hobby in a big way for the "Fuff". The fluff aspect is the escapism and usually that means writing my own. Reading stuff is cool, but I usually only do so for inspiration & to ensure my own work is not conflicting with that which currently exists.
The reason I think I enjoy the painting aspect and pushing my abilities in every detail I can is because I am 110% NOT artistic, but have taught myself to paint miniatures to a decent degree, and I find this very satisfying. I always wanted to be able to draw etc and despite going to a number of art classes and having a girlfriend who's an artist and tries to teach me, I still draw like a 5y/o. Painting miniatures isn't art, but I've recently found it just about satisfies me in my lack of artistic ability. ?

I enjoy every part of the hobby including painting. I came from a modeling background anyway, so its what I enjoyed.
However, finding the time to sit down and paint is my biggest problem. If I am to paint, then I like to have a whole evening of un-interrupted time. Otherwise there's no point. I'm not a particularly fast painter. It frustrates me when my cousin can get an army painted in a week, and it takes me months. Its my own fault though, if I see a gem, or tassle, or purity seal, I have to paint it. I find it hard to ignore the detail.
As said earlier, though, it then comes to gaming, and they all get chipped to pieces anyway. I must start to learn to speed paint.
I suppose the only parts of the hobby I dont enjoy, or spend enough time on are bases and terrain.
