I have a friend who is not opposed to wargaming, but greatly prefers fantasy and larger scale than Warmaster.

However, I am willing to take another run at it (last WH fantasy game I played was 10 years ago).  I was interested to find out that there are skirmish rules available for small forces.  That's nice because WHF is darned expensive, due to the large number of figs needed.

Has anyone played the skirmish rules?

How do they compare to Mordheim?

What about the Chaos Warbands rules?

How does a full blown WHF game stack up as far as tactics and strategy?

Q: How do they compare to Mordheim? 7

Think of them as Mordheim lite. Very similiar, but missing the odd few rules. It also lacks the Mordheim campaign system.

Q: Has anyone played the skirmish rules?

No, although I've played a few games of Mordheim. Personally I prefer the full scale WFB game or the sci-fi Necromunda for my skirmish fix (works better with big guns IMHO). Lot of people like skirmish though and it does have its advantages. Small financial cost, few figures to paint and it serves as an intro into the full game. For me the best part looks to the potential for campaign games, but this wouldn't initially apply to you obviously.

Q: What about the Chaos Warbands rules?

Never really looked into it as I'm not a Chaos fan (least favourite army). It does have a campaign system that looks quite comprehensive from a quick glance. All the rules from WD for "Path to Glory" can be found in a little booklet which also has additional material. This might be an ideal start if you like the Chaotic side of things, I'd recommend you do a little more research in this area.

Q: How does a full blown WHF game stack up as far as tactics and strategy?

Lots of strategy in Warhammer. The crucial phase is close combat, although some of the armies can get quite nasty in the magic (Skaven/Tzeentch/ect) or shooting phase (Dwarfs/Empire/etc). Running down units or forcing them to flee off the board is the easiest way to win a battle. Making use of combined charges, especially in the flanks/rear of units is essential as this will tip the all important combat resolution result in your favour. Drawing opponent into traps by knowing when to flee is also key. Pyschology is the other important factor, especially for those armies not immune to panic.

Hope that helps  :)

Actually, he is willing to play Epic, and since he has most Sunday afternoons free, I will definitely try to convert him.  I think he'll probably hold out for at least SOME fantasy, though.

As far as getting a new friend, I've known this guy for 18 years (longer than I didn't know him).  We geeks are thick as thieves around here, we are.  :p

(Fantasy's not THAT bad.  I've even got some slack to buy some new figs since my wife spent $100 on shoes yesterday
}:) )
