I use Latex (currently writing a thesis), ask me anything  :)

It has a steep learning curve, but the rewards are worth it.

:oh: I will be watching this post with interest.

Wouldn't it just be faster and easier to run InDesign/Quark under wine/VM? Im asuming you'll say no as its not open source, so have you looked at Scribus? http://www.scribus.net/

Latex has a powerful macro system that could be used for templating the army lists.

For example, in the source document you would specify just the raw info: name, description, image filename, stats. The macro would then transform this into the appropriate markup (table, paragraph, img). The Latex renderer would in turn do the positioning and styling.

I can help with writing the macro if you like.

One thing to note is that writing in Latex is similar to writing in raw HTML. You get the benefits of not having to manually position and style everything, however, it is not WYSIWYG and not many people know how to use it, however, it does produce very professional looking documents.

I don't know anything about LaTeX. However, as a C++ programmer, I have some encouraging words:

I like (insert name of skill here) because it's a little too hard. Think about it. It's one of those aphorisms like, "If you meet the Buddha in the road, kill him."

I'm streuck with the same problem as compiling an army list with OpenOffice messes up the things a lot unless you have one file for each one or two pages.

Open Office is terrible for formatting pages, just awful.
