    What do you recommend for an EW official camera? It's low budget I'm afraid, couple of hundred quid as it's purely for snapping battle pics and model shots for the website.

Nikon D50 up to D80 should be cheaper now that technology has moved on.

It's am SLR camera and very easy to use.

You get what you pay for with cameras really.


In that price range, get a camera with a decent CCD, as many megapixels as you can afford, and a Macro function. Ebay or Amazon are the cheapest place to aquire last year's camera model for a knock-down price.


On the other hand, I'd be happy to let Exodus Wars use my Nikon D80 (which is a proper DSLR camera) for a bit of work, if we could manage to meet up one week.

D80's (without lenses) are still selling for £420+ second hand on Amazon and Ebay... and then you'd need a £100 lens at minimum too.

With that kind of re-sale price, I'm considering trading in for a D90!


You could probably get a D50 with a single lens on Ebay for around £200 if you were patient, but most of them are finishing their auctions at £220-£300.

It really depends on what you plan to use the images for.

There's really no point in spending money on anything above 10 mp unless you plan to have your images blown up to the size of bus-banners. The Mega-pixel race has reached the point where the image resolution is getting well beyond the needs of your average consumer (It may be nice to be able to make good loking large prints of your pics, but exactly how often do you print to A3 or bigger?)
Although there's no doubt that newer cameras have lots of nice new features, you should be well off with a camera that is a couple of years old. An 8-10 mp camera  is quite adequate up to poster size prints.
Just go for well known brands such as Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Pentax or Sony for your DLSRs

The most important part is getting good lenses. This is also the really expensive part. On a limited budget I'd go for a slightly older camera body to save cash and spend those saved money on a better lens. For a mid-range camera body you can easily spend as much for the lens (or even more, depending on the type of lens) than you do on the body itself.

Get a decent standard lens and consider a dedicated macro lens, if you only plan on photographing miniatures with the camera.

Later you might also want to consider an external flash. For closeup photography your DSLR  lens will get in the way if you use a built in flash unit on your camera. Some say you can't use flash for miniature photography. I disagree. It is quite possible (and can yield very good results too) if you know how to use it (eg. using bounce flash and diffusers)


For a non-DSLR camera the same applies. You get nice features with newer cameras, but due to the small size of the lens, the image quality will never be as good as a true DSLR, no matter how many MP you pump in there. Instead of buying the latest compact camera I'd buy a slightly older DSLR any day (unless size was an issue).
That said, you can still get very nice results using a compact camera, and they're certainly cheaper than a DSLR and a good lens.

Oh a Tripod is a must for taking photos of miniatures, to get rid of the wobble in your hands that'll otherwise cause a slight blurring.

You can pick up a cheapo one for a tenner.

I don't normally put pictures of naked females bathing on these forums but here you go, she has been accused (with good reason) of being a bit cold blooded, but she has a good heart.

I haven't really chained her up, it is the plug.
