I think "knock-off shop" is a bit of a harsh way to describe someone who has made models of either hard to find models or models inspired by ceratin movies/TV shows. I think that is out of order personally.
Ravenstar produced figures that were detailed and well moulded with very little flash. His production quality was as good as more maintsream manufacturers such as Forgeworld. Especially when you consider it was not his main job but merely a hobby done in evenings/weekends.
I bought several of his Colonial ships inspired by both old and new BSG. These were invaluable in actually making a Full Thrust/Starmada Colonial fleet adding some variant classes to the Hasbro Titanium Galactica.
He commercially sells them to make a profit. Not as a hobby or something for friends. His prices factor in a salary for his time and I beleive his company is registered from past discussion on TMP.
He does actually have various licences now for certain models and he certainly isn't as blatent as studio bergstrom (which is inferior quality as well).
Yes they are nice models. Yes they fill a hole that the licencors don't wish to fill. But hes still running it as a money making propisition which uses other peoples IP.
To my knowledge E&C and otter have no intentions of doing the same.
Still none of that would stop me buying some if I wanted to play a BSG game (sadly the last season of the tv show spoiled things considerably).
