I actually have a copy of Little Wars, that I found in a store in London, it is a great read.... and I think Kriegspiel has recently been rereleased with large map as a game... I just cant remember by who! |

Believe it or not "Little Wars" is what got me into this hobby. I spent a lot of time in the public library as a kid, and found this book among the hobby and games books. (I had always liked boardgames and model kits). I checked it out, and made my own version of it using a bucket of little green army men and a plastic gun that shot little rubber pellets. Years later I discovered White Dwarf, realized there was a whole world of games like "Little Wars" and got "Space Marine" for a birthday present. 16 years later, I'm still playing it (Space Marine, not Little Wars, though I could probably be persuaded). |

In the Spiegel article it says: "Vor Reiswitz nutzen Militärs abstrakte, schachbrettartige Spielfelder", that is, "before Reiswitz the military used abstract, chess-like gameboards". Ive read that Maurice of Orange and/or (cant remember exactly) Gustavus Adolphus played some sort of game in the early 17th century, and that they supposedly used metal miniatures. Anyone know anything abour those older games/tactical simulations? |
