Not being able to find anyone to go to see Star Trek 11 with me - ![]() I know that there are a few space scfi series, but even most of these are ground troops with space sequences or set piece climaxes - BSG, B5, etc. I am looking for a cool movie, full of space fleet battles, done well, as 'realistic' as possible. Does anything actually exist like this? |

EVERYBODY unanimously loves this movie, even the die hard anti-treks! *bangs head on table* Come on Iain, you need to apply some serious pressure to your chums, they need to realise what they are missing! A bit of force now and then they can bathe in the majestic glory of the new Trek. See if you can spot the tribble... |

Once you get past Star Trek and Star Wars, there isn't much that I can recall. The Last Starfighter (a sentimental childhood favorite) had some cool sequences for its time (one of the first computer graphics special effects movies ever made, along with TRON). Starship Troopers has a brief sequence with the fleet getting pasted by artillery bugs firing up from the surface. The Fifth Element had some short sequences, but no real fleet action. The only real spacefleet I can think of is the old Robotech / Macross anime series that was shown on US morning TV when I was a kid. I don't recall much about it, but I definitely remember a space fleet. I think the success of Star Wars scared everybody away from even trying to film a space fleet battle. I think it's time someone tried though. A good WWII allegory in space with carriers and fighters and capital ships firing missiles would be a lot of fun. Maybe one of the Honor Harrington books would work, I've heard good things about that series, but never read it. |

Quote: (Hena @ 19 May 2009, 08:22 ) Didn't Wing Commander have some? Not that it's a good movie otherwise. I was going to suggest this same movie. It's only an okay movie, but the fleet combat is kind of cool. |

For fleet vs fleet, these are the only I can think of off the top of my head: Revenge of the Sith Return of the Jedi Serenity All the rest (Wing Commander, most star trek, etc) are typically 1 ship vs 1 ship, which is a bit different. For TV shows, a couple eps of b5 (the ends of seasons 3 and 4), plus several eps of ST:DS9 (dominion war stuff), and the BSG ep where the escaped from new caprica (which has that awesome jump into the atmosphere and free-fall scene). Of all those, Serenity is probably the most realistic though (the fleet scene is pretty short, though). It doesn't have as many 'exploding milk truck' type explosions that the earlier movies had. |

![]() Battle Beyond the Stars... it's the Magnificent Seven in Space... not very realistic though... but it does have some eye candy to distract you from that fact... um, hope you liked the Waltons too 'cause John Boys in it. ![]() |

I just remembered another good TV fleet vs fleet scene, from Stargate: Atlantis. About halfway through season 4, there is an awesome extended fleet battle between the humans, more humans, and wraith vs the replicators. Also, the 9th season finale of SG:SG1 had a pretty good fleet battle as well. |

it's the Magnificent Seven in Space Which is just Seven Samarai in the old west the old Robotech / Macross anime series I hear there is a live action Hollywood tent pole in the works. But... EVERYBODY unanimously loves this movie, even the die hard anti-treks! Even my GF loved this movie, so much so that she was brought it up two days later.  But I have to vote for Star Wars Episode 3 as the best fleet space combat, followed by BSG and B5. |

Thanks for your comments, guys. Star Wreck is actually in my local supermarket.... I have downloaded all of the clips from the link posted. It does seem that most films only have set piece battles as 'attention grabbers' rather than as the main plot lines. Anime is welcomed too. I will work on my friends again about ST11.... Maybe I will have to see it on my own - which I hate doing! ![]() Thanks. |
