So I am writing a scenario for Epic (Sci-fi Commander version to follow once I get the Chaos army list done for it :-) that involves a Chaos Warp Rift being created

The idea is that the Chaos player has to do something that then enables a warp rift to open and Daemons to pour out. The opposing player would have to then stop the daemons and close the rift.

I was thinking that it would be a terrain piece that I could assign stats to and the opposing player would then try to destroy it.

But what starts it up and acts as a limiting device? I was thinking that the Chaos player could feed cultists to it but that seems a little grim :-)

I think that Inquisitor uses this kind of gateway, by forcing the player to spend actions at a certain point (for example a stone circle). You could add in a new order which Chaos formations containing an Icon Bearer can take, giving them a dice roll to create the rift?

I was thinking that any Chaos Lord could get into base contact and then attempt to open the gate. Each turn, starting with the turn they initiate the contact, they would roll a D6 and once they managed to roll 11 or more (over multiple turns) the gate would be open.

You could expand that idea a bit. Say that X units needs to be killed with Ncm radius of it. This would mean that Chaos can sacrifice it's own units, but killing enemy near it would be quite ok as well. Since enemy needs to destroy it, they might need to come close to it. So Chaos would then merely kill them and thus help their own way.

I would like to avoid this sort of thing if possible since I am using something veery similar in another, perhaps linked, scenario.

We did a scenario based on the Eldar titans emerging from the big wraithgate in the Baran War that might work for you.  The Farseer had to be within range of the gate (base contact, iirc) in the end phase to try to open it.  Success was determined similar to the way reserves enter in 40K - 6+ in the first turn, 5+ second, etc., until it succeeds.

Of course, that's going to work a lot quicker than your "add to the total" idea.  There's almost a 50% chance of it opening on one of the first 2 turns, so you'd have to time the scenario differently.

You could add a "sacrifice" character trait so the CSM player could nominate which units could potentially open the gate.  That way they could roll for each unit that gets to the gate and the CSM player would have to make a choice between spreading out the ability to open the gate across multiple formations versus suiciding multiple die rolls into a single formation that could success really quickly or be stopped more easily.  However, that again changes the timing of the scenario and would need to be balanced carefully.

The scenario doesn't end on turn 4. The opposing player has a rolling reinforcements so as units get destroyed they can come back on as reinforcements once there is a valid formation to put on the table.

The game is decided, I am thinking, by how many units the Chaos player destroys, by destroying the Warp Rift, and how many daemons they can summon. Once a certain number of GDs come out the game is also over.

Your 6+, 5+ suggestion looks good as well.

Based on that, you could make it an ongoing process where the summoner can pull daemons through the rift pretty easily rather than "opening the spigot" for daemons to file out of their own accord.

Steadily adding daemons might be easier to balance against rolling reserves than a big glut of them.  It would basically be a rolling reserve of daemons.  You could balance it by just making sure the point values of daemons popping out were roughly comparable to the speed at which units re-entered play.

I did want to have it more "spigot" based than not. If only so you'd not need to summoner once the warp rift was open but you could still destroy it to shut it off.

1) Open rift by sacrificing to the dark gods (using the reinforcement roll suggestion)
2) Once open each turn there is a number of summoning points available (2D6 + the turn number?)
3) The opposing player needs to stop the rift from opening by killing anyone activating the warp rift or destroying the warp rift prior to or after it opens
4) If the player can summon (and retain) 6 GDs or a total of 80 summoning points of Daemons then they win. Any other result is a loss

I was also thinking of using the Living Metal Necron rule to limit the damage to the Warp Rift so you could just nail it at long range with a few Shadowsword or Scorpion shots to blow it up

Just need to finish painting some daemons and then I need to build the Warp Rift :-)

I want to have up to 60 stands of daemons (including some Mounted Daemonettes) ready for the game and I also hope to have eight GDs ready to go as well.

Right now I have eight stands of Daemonettes, five Mounted Daemonettes stands and eight Flamer stands on the paint table.

Once I get some cash I will be picking up some Warmaster Screamers and basing those as well.
