Im sorry, I know this isnt the forum for this but anyway I need to vent.

I JUST DELETED 3 DAYS WORK! I have stupidly stupidly stupidly been working on the same copy of my word document for 3 days thanks to the hibernate function.  I thought my word was autosaving.  It wasnt.  So now in a moment of madness I just closed document, wasnt thinking and said "no" to save changes (i thought I was closing a diffferent doc!) and Poof! All the changes to my thesis chapter gone...

Arrgh.  Now its going to be a long night trying to get what I  remember back on the page.... blub...

When doing my dissertation I copied over a new file with an old file by accident. Lost a weeks work and the deadline was a few days away. Words failed me.

No temporary file left in your temporary files directory?

Yeah, thats pretty much how I felt.  Amazingly i seem to be on a role getting the words back on the page.  And it reads better than it did before.  Maybe this is a good thing (also I think it helps that im doing a sciency bit so its mainly describing graphs)

Damn that sucks. It's happened to me once or twice. But, as you say, sometimes when you redo it, it can be better and more concise.

The only way to go is to become an obsessive-compulsive about saving, backing up and resaving. I don't even save using the same document - I save any changes as a new document periodically (so that if something happens to the document I can go back to the last save).

Which reminds me, I've not backed up my files for a while...

CHeers for the sympathising guys, its amazing how hearing that other people have done similar things helps lift the spirits :)

in the end I think it was productive as it killed off 3 days of tearing my hair out and forced me to refocus.  Maybe I should do this wit the other 20,000 words :D ....  I really shouldnt even joke about that *touches wood*

Sorry to hear that Joker - and good like - I've just been through the thesis business and it can be a pain, especially when you lose something - at one point I managed to loose a sheet of results (handwritten, see, I don't even need a computer to mess things up for me) and spent a couple of days looking for it. It had the parameters for preparing specimens for half my tests on it, and although Iknew it all, there was one value I just could not remember. Found it in the end, but it was nasty!

I sympathise sir!

At work, I'm the IT guy and thought our server was automatically backing up every day.

Then BANG, a hard drive failed. We thought it'd be ok because of the auto backup, nope. The server hadn't backed anything up for over 6 MONTHS!!!!!!!! Even now half a year later we're still feeling the repercussions of that.

I'll extend my sympathies as well J0k3r.

I use to work on an IT helpdesk for a uni (whilst I was studying there). ?It amazes me still how many people rely on one copy of their ultra important documents. ?It's even more amazing when often these are on floppy disks or USB keys...

I lost count of the people that left the helpdesk utterly devastated after we couldn't recover the data and we went to great lengths to recover data believe me.
