Has anybody been reading Armchair General? I've been contemplating on subscribing to some military history/gaming magazine and this one does seem to hold some promise. So if you are a subscriber or just have read the odd issue please tell me what you think.  http://www.armchairgeneral.com/

Of course, if you want to recommend some other publication I'm all ears.  :)

I would be interested in hearing about this, too. You do realise that there is a free 10-page sample available on the site?

I have been thinking along the same lines recently, and just a last weekend ordered the latest issue of Battlegames magazine. If it is any good, I will subscribe.

I narrowed it down to either that, or Wargames: Soldiers and Strategy magazine. Armchair General may be too difficult to pick up in print a version over here.

Excellent Mag ! ?Reminds me of the old Strategy & Tactics mags. I've seen some of the historians on the History Channel and even read some of their books. It really is a military history mag for guys who are interested in real military hardcore history. ?There are a number of interative articles every issue. You pick the Course of Action(CoA), for certain historical scenarios. And each CoA is evaluated. And there is a mail in scenario you can come up with a CoA. And the correct solution is evaluted the following issue. Since many of the authors are former military, they know their craft. It kind of reminds me of Combined Arms School ... My recomendation - get a subscription - Now ! ? I don't have a sub, but my old Recon Tm XO from my Cadet days does. He reads them, then mails them to me ! I guess it was worth saving his butt a few times way back then !

Sounds about exactly what I'm looking for. Hardcore military history. And if you are saying it's hardcore [note to Otterman, still talking about history here...  ]  I'm willing to take your word.

Well, Battlegames issue 10 arrived this morning.

Overall comments - I am reasonably impressed. After flicking through, I have decided to pick up four other issues, and will probably get a subscription in the near future.

Articles in issue ten are (based on a quick look through)...

Ancient wargames rules round up - A discussion on five 'element based' rules sets (DBA, Armati, Vis Bellica, Warmaster Ancients, Command and Colors Ancients), and then play a single scenario game with each set to give a quick idea of the strengths and weaknesses of each system. A very interesting article.

Making rivers for wargames tables.

A couple of 'general discussion' articles - scenario inspiration from books, etc.

Siege ideas, and campaign rule ideas.

Overview and update for Kriegsspiel (which is apparently being reprinted and re-released from Two Fat Lardies).

A list of 'what were they thinking' (strange of bad rules) in fantasy rules sets, focussing on Warhammer Fantasy Battle.

Scenario - Siege train.

News from the industry - books, rules and minis.

Larry Leadhead cartoon.

There are adverts towards the back. There seem to be enough to be interesting, without getting the way.

In general, 50 pages, glossy and full colour. The magazine seems more focussed on actual rules sets and I was pleased to see less emphasis on scenarios which bothers me about most other mags. Battlegames also states that it covers fantasy and science fiction games - although there doesnt seem to be much from these aspects of the hobby in this issue, at least there is a chance of them appearing.

Overall, worth checking out.

Yes, it is UK based. Issues one and two are now pretty much sold out and are therefore available to buy as PDF.

THanks C/S !  I thought they were in the UK. The UK has always produced some good wargame mini mags.  I used to read thru the "Wargamer's Digest" at the hobby shop years ago. And I remember those being very good. IIRC, they were based in the US. BTW in the Armchair General mags, I only got the "right" solutions about 60% of the time ... maybe that was why I only made it to the rank of Captain ! :(   :;):

Chris: The article doesnt lay out the 'best and one you should get' but rather gives the strengths and weaknesses of the systems for the scenario.

For example, the players enjoyed DBA, Armati, and Command and Colors Ancients over the other two, but found that Vis Bellica (my set of choice!) gave the most interesting game at the price of the tables and modifiers, for example. Also, the review was for element based games, and so ignored games such as Warrior, etc. I will be interested to see how Field of Glory fits into the reviewed list.

My problem with wargame mags generally is that they are too focussed. I play a large variety of games. I want a round up and a publication which looks at all games from Ancients to WWII air to Science Fiction, and I want real world tactics and background as well!

I have decided that I am asking too much. Battlegames will keep me going for wargaming, but can anyone recommend a 'real world' tactics magazine which covers everything from Iraq to Qadesh?

(Sorry to hijack this thread!)

Armchair General covers a lot of subjects, but mostly 19th and 20th Centuries ...
