I seem to be late on this one but this thread is really good.
I would say that over the years I have changed opinions. I started when I was 17 and I loved the models and when I played the game I was hooked! After that I was just buying models like crazy. My painting was just enough to look ok for playing although I didnt get to paint much. I had enough for a basic game of marines and eldar but the eldar were thin on infantry because I found them hard to paint.
Now I would say that I enjoy painting and collecting epic more than the game atm but probably because I have been painting more than gaming due to lack of forces. I have nearly every single model released; there are only a few that has so far escaped me but I really like the hunt for rares, the painting and getting tips all over to improve my skills. I still love the game and after I have filled out my forces I hope to really start gaming.
Like others here I am a perfectionist and I wil strip and repaint a model if I am not happy, and if it takes 3 hours to paint a single line because of mistakes I will do that. I did that with a couple of the Tiger sharks when nothing seemed to go right.
I do get demotivated sometimes when it becomes like a production line but I am trying to balance things out by painting different models to keep things varied.
One thing I do like is the pride I have when a model is finished and it turns out really good. Its a really great feeling.
thats my 2 cents anyway

Hahaha well I havent suffered that yet but once my Tau force is finished I might get that feeling when I play against Tom and his DA force.

I (usually) enjoy painting, but am very slow. I take my time to try and get the result I have pictured i my head.
However, once my model is done, and I'm feekling all proud of it, then I will field it asap in battle.
The only trouble is, I have never used any Varnishes, so they get damaged after a while. Especially when tranporting.
Do you guys use the GW sprays?
I have one, but haven't had the guts to spray a newly painted model with it, incase I f*ckit up and ruin my newly painted figure.
I think I have the Matt Varnish spray.

Hmm... I'd love to hear from someone who has used the spray varnish too - I havn't bothered varnishing any of my minis as the majority of them I just have on display...
However, my BFG fleet really needs it as I play every couple of weeks, and the paint just wears off the projecting fins etc...

The problem with sealing minis is two-fold:
1.- Gloss varnish protects well, but it looks awful.
2.- Matte varnish looks good, but doesn't protect well.
The solution that many people use (including myself) is to lay down a gloss coat and THEN a matte coat. You get the best of both worlds.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
P.S. I have used GW sealants with no problems. Just one thing, never use the gloss can when it's running low. It will kick out ugly globs of gloss sealant when the propellant runs low.

Yes,
I always spray my models with clear flat/matte.
There are number of good brands out there found in hobby shops & crafts stores. I cover my decal/transfers with Polly-S S Clear Flat out of the bottle, with a brush, then when it is dry, I spray the whole model with the clear flat spray.
The best time to spray is outside on a clear, sunny day. Never Spray on a rainy day, the spray with pick up the water vapor and will ruin your paint job.
However, Maksim is correct, everything I have read says, spray with gloss sealer and then clear flat.

Ahhh, there's the answer I was looking for...
I was going to try it out on a spare Airfix model that I try colours on to see if they go well together, something like a tester model. ?
I might take up your advice, Maksim, certainly beats repainting bits at various points. Maybe I will give it a go on the Airfix model after all, to see how it turns out.

I use two coats of matt varnish painted with good ol' brush.
BTW, whatever you do DON'T spray paint outside when the temperature is below freezing. I tried that once...
