Hi Guys,

I just got back from Episode III and enjoyed it, but didn't think too much of it. It was Star Wars made for the MTV ADHD generation... scenes were brisk and we never spent time on much of any scene. The enemy characters  seems to have stop watches set on their screen time... :(

Great special effects though!  :)

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Are you sure?  I thought the whole movie raced along the first time, but on the second viewing I realised there is actually a lot of talking inbetween the action sequences... certainly as much as 'Return of the Jedi' I would have thought. For that matter, I thought the first three movies were all 'MTV ADHD' action movies anyway??? (Empire less so due to Dagobah!).

I'm not disagreeing with you individually in particular Maksim (your views are in line with most people on this forum!). I just think that most over 25's seem to have an overly rosy view of the first 3 films due to having seen them as children/teenagers, compared to seeing the next three as adults...

I wonder what peoples opinions would be if they had been released the other way round (E1-3 around 1980, and E4-6 now).  I'm picking that episodes 1-3 would probably be regarded as the classics with political intrigue and deep fundamental questions about good and evil... while 4-6 would be seen as dumb action movies with teddybears in the final    :p  :D

I think you ask some great questions here. I know for myself, the big turn off for me was the lack of anything "New".

- The first three movies (Episodes IV-VI) were something that had never been done before. Quaint and silly as they might be, the covering of new ground drove them into my mind in a way these last three movies have failed to do.

I do not think that the first three are that much better.

- In fact, I sat and watched all five movies just a little while ago. Keep in mind that the last is not available right now without supporting the black market, and I will not do that.

- All five were similar in "quality" as far as acting is concerned.

- The real issue for me though was the first three still felt more story-driven to me and the last two (Episodes IV and V) felt more like long advertisements for toys with some story added in for fun.

Anyway, that is my take!

Hi Markco and Gang,

Markco: Are you sure? ?
I thought the whole movie raced along the first time, but on the second viewing I realised there is actually a lot of talking inbetween the action sequences... certainly as much as 'Return of the Jedi' I would have thought.

The simple answer is "NO." :)

- My impression is that Epsiode III was made for the MTV ADHD generation, but I didn't try to collective quantitative date or proof... just personal reflection and opinion.

- And we are going to see it again... hopefully on the huge IMAX screen next time!

- Mark Hamill (Luke) is no virtuoso actor, but Hayden Christensen (Anakin) is far too whiney for me. His acting made me want to throw tomatoes at him...

- Of course, I do have to admit that George Lucas has a bad tendency of turning good actors into robot-like "droids" and not let them do what they are supposed to be good at...

- Another thing I'll add is that Han Solo and Princess Leia had a chemistry that Padme and Anakin just did NOT have! I read in a Roger ebert review that he write that most greeting cards have more passion than a George Lucas love scene and I tend to agree... }:)

Markco: For that matter, I thought the first three movies were all 'MTV ADHD' action movies anyway???
(Empire less so due to Dagobah!).
?

You may have a point...

- I'd certainly concede one to you, my friend.

Markco: I'm not disagreeing with you individually in particular Maksim (your views are in line with most people on this forum!). It could be an age thing...

- That is a natural tendency to glorify the halcyon yesteryear and denigrate the present...

Markco: I wonder what peoples' opinions would be if they had been released the other way round (E1-3 around 1980, and E4-6 now). - I'll take Ewoks anyday over Jar Jar Binks... ?:D

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
Diana made an interesting observation that the rank-and-file droid troopers have a number of dog-like characteristics... I looked at their droid faces in Episode I and never made that connection, but it now seems very apt to me... DOG-BOTS! ? :)

All other points aside, this alone makes the first three movies better then the last three!

Jar Jar Binks, one of the most hated non-bad guys in the movies ever! :;):

Of course one person loved him, George Lucas... :L

Hi Guys,

On a non-Star Wars note, the missus wanted to see Star Wars Episode IV yesterday, but the rental place was all out so we rented "Signs" and "The Alamo."

------

She had never seen "Signs" and we enjoyed it very much! :)

There's some great humor in that movie... :D

------

I'm really looking forward to the two "War Of the Worlds" films coming out. I reread the novel last year and have had Martians on my mind since...

"Signs" was a good warm-up for the WOTW films...

If anyone is interested in WOTW then I ecommend they check out either of the 6mm E-groups in my signature because both have links folders full of WOTW goodness!

------

We didn't get to watch "The Alamo" yeseterday and will try today.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

yes WOTW will be cool, but sadly its a modern version though, not the Well's Victorian SciFi.

Bring on the Martians!

Hi Guys,

There are two WOTW films coming out:

- A British production which is a film adaptation of the original H.G. Wells novel...

AND:

- A big Hollywood production directed by Spielburg starring Tom Cruise, which is only loosely related to the original H.G. Well novel. I imagine that the new Hollywood film will be more realted to the previous Hollywood movie with Martian flyers blasting tanks and the like.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Just saw "The Alamo"...

Hi Guys,

I finally got around to watching the film "The Alamo." Out of a 10, i would give it a 7.5+ to an eight. I don't think it's a masterpiece, but it was entertaining and the costumery and props were amazing. It was almost worth it just to see the amazing Mexican uniformry of the "Napoleon of the West!"

I, like many others, saw the original Disney film with John Wayne, which I enjoyed very much, but the newer film is much more serious and adult. The Disney film was sacharine and onviously made for children. Even as a child, I knew this.

The film also covered more of the whole story of the rebellion of the Texans and Tejanos against the dictatorship of Santa Anna and the Mexican Empire. The film covered how the defeat at the Alamo made it possible for general Sam Houston to later defeat Santa Anna and in a rather embarrassing way. It was nice to see the larger picture because the actual story of the fall of the Alamo is rather depressing.

Some of the best scenes of the film were deleted including one I enjoyed very much with a Tejano (Mexicans who decided to side with Texas) wondering how he could have helped those "pendejos" to defeat the massive Mexican army. You can see the character wonder what he's traded in for what.

The whole experience makes me want to buy the Irregular Miniatures 6mm Alamo set and go at it! :)

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Just to correct a few minor points. The 1960 version with John Wayne was not a Disney Film. It was a MGM Film.

The new one, 2004 version, is a Touchtone picture. Thus the funny part here is the 2004 one is a Disney-owned version.

Glad you liked it. Wish a few more peope had. It was one of the biggest bombs we had in the last few years. ?:{
