Hi Guys,
I had a big day off yesterday (22 March 2005) heading over to Hobby Monkey, our local gaming store) ?and meeting not one friend but TWO groups of friends over the day.
Air Games In the Morning:
I met Rob-Mako and his son, Russel, in the morning and played jet games and exchanged some models. We played a game of Phantoms (A jet adaptation of the Mustangs ruleset) and played a 1973 Yom Kippur war scenario of two Egyptian MiG-21s dogfighting two Israeli Mirage IIIs over Lake Timsah on the Suez Canal. As usual, I always seem to get the MiGs while Rob and Russel got the Mirages. However the game was short-lived because I quickly outflew Russel (Which is odd since he usually utterly spanks Rob and I) and unloaded Soviet 23mm rounds into his aircraft sending it to the ground leaving behind parachutes in the air. Rob fought my two MiGs with no results for a number of turns and then bugged out. It was a good game. We went out to lunch afterwards.
E-A and Doom In the Evening:
And then I met a gigantic group of Epic guys in the evening and had a good time. The guys slated to play were Eric-Chern (SMs) and Aaron Clark (Eldar) in a 2,700 point game. Eric actually brought out a SM list that wasn't Termie-heavy, but still used his characteristic drop pods (Loaded with scouts though). Aaron had a much more reasonable army with two Revenants, two detachments of Nightspinners, an Autarch, lots of jet bikes and a ton of Aspect Warriors in Wave Serpents.
Eric's SMs got an initial lucky shot which took out the Eldar Autarch, but, to Aarons credit, he didn't give up the game and played to the bitter end dealing a lot of damage to the SMs. The SMs probably still won, but it was a good fight even though we had a very good idea that the SMs would win very early in the game (before the end of the first turn).
Chuck's And A Newbie's First Day At The Monkey:
Chuck also showed up (his first game ever at Hobby Monkey) as well as Aaron Morneau and a guy name Ian who played SM-2/TL in the old days and I encouraged him to rejoin the game.
Two Most Popular Games At the Shop:
Flame of War and Warmachine are the biggest two games at Hobby Monkey lately. With GW;s big price increase, noone plays GW games anymore. It's been ages since I saw them out on a table.
Doom: The Boardgame! With the Cold Navy Admiral!
I played a game of the new Doom board game with Brad, Chris and Mike Hardy (One of the designers of the Cold Navy starship game). The Doom game is very difficult. Two Marines died (And respawned) in just under a half hour with us only about half way through the mission (And closing time coming on). Mike had prototypes for the new Cold Navy ships and they're beautiful.
Seeing Old Friends:
I also saw a lot of friends including Bill, who used to run our old shop called Hobby Workshop, which GW put out of business about a year and half ago when they decided to monopolize the on-line business in the USA. Bill did most of his business that way and that was how he turned a profit. His baby boy is already seven years old, which is mind boggling to me. I remember him as a toddler.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
