Ok I've got a problem.

After years and years GW release a magical game i've always wanted to play. Fortuoutously I got paid today and last months overtime money came in as well meaning I actually have enough to pay GWs insane fair and reasonable price.

So there I am giddy from pre-ordering my copy and my gf of 7 years (who in all this time has never expressed any hint of interest in my hobby) walks in and says "oooooh can I paint those"  :sus:

So now what do I do, let a complete novice loose on my limited edition 60 quid boardgame, or try and distract her with lolcats/chocolate/bright shiny things?

Nice, this reminds me of a conversation me and the SO had the other night.  She really wants me to go on walks with her, which I find no interest in, so I countered that I'd go on walks if she bought and painted an army.  Much to my dismay, she agreed.  Now I have to buy her some models to paint, and go on walks if she does.

Reading through the various forums (warseer, bols, etc) it's quite an eye opener reading people's reactions to the game:

"Blood Angel Terminators! But I can't use them with X chapter. The box is useless to me"
"No proper bases, I can't use this in 40K - ripoff!"
"I don't play stealers or marines so I won't be getting this"
"If I get this, I'll have to start a stealer/blood angel army"

Seems people are having a hard time getting around the fact that this doesn't need or require 40k to play or are upset they can't use it to boost their 40k armies. Expectations have changed it seems.

I don't care that they're Blood Angels in the box.  I will never have a Blood Angels army.

And even though I've got a Tyranid army, I'll never use these Genestealers with it.

In fact, I think these pieces are so nice in their own terms, I'm not even going to paint them - I like the 'Board Game' feel of having them just two different coloured plastics.

I will, however, convert and paint a team of Chaos Terminators to go Space Hulk searching - and some daemonic nasties to populate the hulk - Genestealers aren't the only nasty lurking in the 40k universe...

Really, for me this set is going to be the platform for so much gaming.  I can see my wife and step-children playing this - they've got bored quickly when they've played 40k.  Then there's gaming at my local club, where there's interest in doing Space Hulk campaigns.

I think dismissing this because of the Blood Angels, or the bases, or whatever, is just cutting one's nose to spite one's face.

Absolutely agree with both of these. Some groups should just see this as it is. I was initially on the fence about this game, as the miniatures look smaller than 28mm. I was assured that they were 'standard GW size' but I realised that it actually doesnt really matter. It is a board game that has the highest chance of any of getting non-gamers to play it. Its not designed to add to your Marine force, but then neither it is supposed to be good value for the miniatures that you get in it. I see this as another Battle of the Five Armies LotR set, which was also limited release and self contained.

Aus Website ........ snip......unavailable by 5pm.....snip

Um

I was just able to place in a pre-order @ 11pm

Are you sure about that?

I noticed that it became available again.  I wonder if it was some glitch or if they just decided to do an extra print run after the massive scramble to buy copies.

I have just put in a patio so chances are I won't be getting a copy as my wallet is unlikely to recover while it is available.

Ha! Hopefully she'll have forgotten by the time your copy of the game arrives...  :sulk:

Funnily my wife, who should really be far too busy doing her midwifery training, is going through a 'I want to paint some miniatures and buy an Ikea display case to put them in!' phase  :))

Thankfully she just wants to paint random things like Daemonettes and Sisters of Battle, hopefully she won't want to go anywhere near the minis from this set...

Anyway... if she persists, order another copy..?  :oo:

About pricing in France:

1st Edition: ~60€
2nd Edition: ~75€
3rd Edition: 78€

So price increase between 2nd and 3rd Edition is not that big.

Could be, I do expect to pay $100, but any more is just a outrage.

Certainly FFG are better performers in the board game market than GW ever was.  And I'm sure they'd pay an absolute BOMB in licensing and royalties for it.

I beg to differ. When GW make boardgames they make very good ones. Space Hulk isn't a boardgame per see. Games as Blood Royal are.    8v)

Yes GW did make excellent games. And FFG already have a number of those excellent GW oldies, But FFG are much more successful than GW where in the boardgames market. They are better at selling them, better at supporting them. Successful games get continual reprints.

With Space Hulk under FFG's wing you'd have a game that will be continuously available. Not these silly one offs that you get from GW.

Space hulk is as much a board game as FFG's Doom or Decent. Both have plug in corridors and rooms for a board, both have miniatures as playing pieces.

Is that maybe more to do with the way the currency exchange rate has gone than the GW pricing? I don't know much about that kind of thing, but did hear something a while back about how with that recession thing and our government's financial idiocy our UK currency was worth much less against most other currencies, with the exception on the Australian $ which had dropped even more in worth.

I may buy this, but I'm not in any rush and will probably see it and play it in real life at some point and see.

What is with the 'limited edition' thing though? Is it like a not actually that limited edition of million(s) of copies that'll take years to sell anyway, and they're just claiming it to whip up an extra buying frenzy? Or is it really only going to be on sale for a brief period and if so why would they do that rather than make money from it ongoingly? Lastly does limited edition imply less likelyhood of support in terms of new extra scenarios/rules/modes/supplements?

The key here is making EXTRA money ongoingly: Rather than merely diverting funds from 40k players pockets. (See the fate of Specialist Games)

Sorry, I really do believe that this will be a one off print run from GW. However, as I speculated above, farming off to FFG, who operate in a slightely different market, could be a win-win situation for GW.

A potential that I see happening is that the game will sell out, the rulesbooks and board tiles are put online under Specialist Games as a PDF and the miniatures stuck up for sale as direct only collectors minis.

"Games Workshop" and "limited edition" seems to be a fairly worthless combination of words, Helms Deep castle set thingys was "limited edition" initially then about 6 months later it appeared again. There was also a special spare marine captain only available with a specific deal on the 3rd edition 40k starter set. About a year later the same model appeared as a generally available SM captain. Battle of Five Armies boxed set...again wasn't that initially meant to be one print run/limited availability? A few years on its still available.

Buy it if you want it, not just because its limited edition... if it sells really well GW will just keep it on or release it again in a year or so.
