Well, i frequent the 2 places, and while i recon there are sometime unfriendly tones or posts, or at least rough tone where there shouldn't be and some lack of moderations in other places, i suppose given the trafic increase since the launch of the game, it's inevitable on an "official" forum.
We start to see the same question poping over and over, wether those are rules question (the FAQ being split between the book, a stand alone PDF and a thread in the forum doesn't help), or the same questioning about a rule-still-in-playtest about long raging debates (Some Eldar stuff come to mind; i don't count the thread about Holofield or Free avatar anymore), and i fear some of the less calm older member become a bit impatient/intolerant/whatever.
However, there are many interesting people there also (well, some are here anyway), and sometime quite interesting thread or discussions; there often are interesting Fan List/rules, and i recon these profit very well of the habit of feedbacking everything due to the playtesting orientation of the forum; quite interesting post and quite nice pictures sometime in the painting forum (there seem to be some kind of emulation between painter, and i think the standard of Epic painting is way up compared to what i used to see at the previous editions times).
Following the playtesting process is also an interesting matters (if you manage not too imply too strongly in some minor point that make loud noise) and give quite an interesting insight on the design behind a rule set and the way it all work.
All in all, while there are some annoying things on the playtest vault, i don't think it is of no interest for that; here, there are quite less new people arriving over time and many posters know themselves for quite a good amount of time; this make the ambiance more cosy and friendly; but it can also be somewhat intimidating to newcomers.
I like the 2 places quite a lot (but i am not on any Mailing list, so i may have a different view on things); i simply don't enjoy exactly the same things on both.

Ah ... but seriously ... I never got the Banelord Titan, either (too over the top for me), but I have a Reaver converted to Chaos and of course 2 Lord of Battles. Plus all the other SM2 & E40K Chaos Engines of Destruction and AFVs !
