Yep, using suitably painted 'codex' Marines would be a fine proxy.

ok, so a basic turn would look like this?
roll off to see who goes first
say i go first;
1. roll for activations 2. make activation moves? 3. fire 4. assault

A basic turn would go like this:
- Player 1 picks a formation - formation moves, shoots, assaults, etc.
- Player 2 picks a formation - formation moves, shoots, assaults, etc.
- Player 1 picks a formation - formation moves, shoots, assaults, etc.
- Player 2 picks a formation - formation moves, shoots, assaults, etc.
Repeat until both players have moved & shot / assaulted all their formations once.
Once every formation on the board has had an order issued to it, that's the end of a turn.
So it's a more active game system than some you might be used to, a lot of back-and-forth throughout the turn.
On the plus side, this means that it's never more than a few minutes before you get to move a unit and attack!

ok, when basing models, is it always best to put the minimum amount of models on a base? for instance, tonight im basing 32 big gunz and 16 dreads. would i put one big gun and 2 grots on each bug gun? or 2 big guns and 4 grots? if each base is a "wound" than more bases equals more wounds, which means the formation sticks around more, so minimum is better right?
would a dread be a one per base or 2 per base?

Studdering, keep in mind that the number of units per formation is independent of how many minis you have on a stand. For example, an Ork Warband consists of 2 Nobz, 6 Ork Boyz and 2 Gretchin stands. It doesn't matter if you have 3 Boyz or 7 Boyz on a stand; it still counts as one stand. As E&C said, some players like to put more minis, especially Orks, on a stand to give it more of a mob look. For Big Gunz, most players I know base one Big Gun per stand, as have I.

It also depends on whether you have field artillery big gunz or shooty boyz with big shoulder-fired weapons. I wasn't sure from your list of units which you had.
Most people (and the "counts as" guidelines in the rulebook) count a full infantry stand of all shooty boyz as a Big Gun unit while a single shooty boy (or even 2) on a stand with normal infantry would just be a boyz stand.
For field arty, the basing guideline is 1-2 arty pieces and 2-4 infantry, iirc. Typical basing I've seen is 1 arty piece and 2-3 crew.

back to the basing issue for a moment, i have noticed that the small square fantasy base (20mm) is the same size as the epic square base, would these fantasy bases be suitable bases for big gunz?

They work okay but they are quite tall compared to the normal Epic bases. The models sort of look like they are on pedestals to me but a lot of people like them.

I've seen players use them at a tourney and it doesn't bother me. As Neal says, they are tall in comparison, about double the thickness of the old square epic bases.

Go for it! It's better than shelling out more money for more bases.

I agree the 20mm Fantasy square bases are a fine basing method.

ok, on a related note, does anyone find movement trays to be useful in epic? i mean im gonna have 30 big gunz. im not sure if they are all gonna be in one formation yet, but it looks to me, like in WHFB, that alot of ranked models move better with trays.
anyone use trays with their larger units? i plan on have large mobs of orks.
