Quote (Lion in the Stars @ 11 Jan. 2006 (21:21)) | You actually got to see a Lanc fly? ?You lucky dog! | Not a Lanc, a B-17 and a B-24. Never seen a Lanc in person. Not too many of them here in the States.
I do, however, know what you mean about the difference in sound between radials and in-lines.

Oh, that was Stormseer, lucky dog.
Yeah, I saw Aluminum Overcast fly by, as well as the DC6 at the airfield.
Gotta get that FW190 model cause it looks pretty to sit on the shelf... unless I can get those largescale WW2 dogfight rulse someone wrote up.

I too have grown up with WWII A/c (and some jets) as I have lived all my life within reach of Biggin Hill and seen many displays including Lancs, Spits, B17s and many more.
As you might expect, I think my personal favourite is still one of the late mark Spits both because of their engine (which is unmistakable), and the way they fly. This is closely followed by the Mosquito - same reasons.
However, I gather that some US vets are rebuilding a B29 in one of the Boeing factories - some project - but it will be fantastic to see one fly again.

I heard this, too. I'm not sure if there are currently any airworthy Superforts. I know the air museum near me is restoring one, but I don't think they are trying to get it to fly.
EDIT: Now that I think about, there might be one B-29 flying, named Fifi.

I believe there are two airworthy Lancs in the world at the moment; one in the Battle of Britain flight here in the UK (the one I've seen), and the other is in Canada iirc.
I do remember seeing one of the very last flying Mossies quite a few years back (my favourite WWII aircraft!), sadly I believe it crashed a couple of years ago.

Yeah, it was a crying shame...
Just found this on Wikipedia, confirming what I'd thought:
There are believed to be around 30 preserved examples at various collections including the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon.
As of 2004 the original W4050 aircraft was undergoing complete restoration in the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre in Hertfordshire, UK. It was designed to carry 4 250lb bombs but tests with 500lb bombs with shortened fins indicated that 4 500lb bombs could be carried.
The last Mosquito known to be airworthy (designated RR299), a T Mk.III built sometime between October 1944 and July 1945, crashed on the 21st of July, 1996 with the loss of both crew after stalling during a banked turn at an airshow in Barton, England. Several potential restorations to airworthy status exist, although the wooden construction makes this difficult. A replica is under construction in New Zealand. |
Nice article too, with some good links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Havilland_Mosquito

Yeah, I live not too far (~60 miles) from the Boeing factory. They're slowly getting the beast restored to airworthy condition. One of their problems is the Boeing stock system. There's almost certainly leftover materials/tooling for the pieces in some warehouse or another, but finding it in the computer is a whole 'nother ball of wax.
Shame about the mossie crew. Planes are rebuildable/replicatable. People are not.

Sigh - I've seen the 6-Merlin formation too, and fell in love with it... in my case, two Spitfires and the Lancaster from the BBMF. Although one of the Spitfires might have had a Griffon, I can't remember which mark it was - doh!
