Hi guys.

I've been on and off with SG for a while now (I'm mostly playing stuff like Federation Commander - really good game!) but I wanted to add a few comments to this discussion.

*Forgeworld taking over SG - those of you who think that this would be a good idea need to talk to the BFG crowd. The screwups, misunderstandings and standoffs between SG and FW over the support and development of Battlefleet Gothic - not least if you look at the depressing treatment of the resin Tau fleet because of Imperial Armour 3 - make me cautious, to put it mildly, about the prospect of FW taking over for all of the Specialist Games. They would just as likely torpedo open development of Epic, if the treatment of BFG is any indication.

Mind you, the whole mess with BFG could have been avoided had SG not taken a hissy fit when the Demiurg Bastion and Tau Emissary were first made, so one can understand FW's reluctance in this regard - but two wrongs don't make a right.

However, if the open process seen in Epic was opened up to include the other Specialist Games, things would get very interesting (I'd love to see BFG have Fleet Champions and an open dev process, but until or unless something happens my interest in that game is on hold.)

*Print on Demand - the likes of ADB - the guys who produce Federation Commander - have made a success of using PoD technology (and in managing a diverse range of wargames with a small company's budget... GW take note!) but according to Andy their hands are tied unless GW as a whole makes the switch.

Which means it'll probably not happen.

*Support in GW stores - I've found that the in-store and higher-up officialdom in GW UK and GW Northern Europe (the latter look after Ireland, as well as Scandinavia) are pretty lukewarm, if not ooutright hostile, towards the Specialist Games. If you'd believe it, GW Dublin doesn't even allow SG to be played at Veteran's nights! (Apparently a bunch of guys kept playing Gorkamorka, and the games which people can actually still buy got tarred with the same brush)

However, when I went over to Canada in the summer (and met Chroma - I'll get a game in next time!) every store I went into were keen to get SG out there (there was even an Epic Tau army in the glass cabinet at Oakville!) and couldn't believe me when I told them about the Dublin store's ban.

Yet, it's hard for me not to feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle when talking to people about Epic, regardless of where i go...

Gary

Hi Gary,

I feel for you.

Epic is, for the most part, dead in my area.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

SG games have been completly canned from GW stores here too (Northern Ireland), it used to be the case that several were played on Veterans night but now everyone has to find alternatives. So, essentially, a Veterans Night that doesn't welcome veterans  :(

GW Plaza, Oxford Street, London.

The store staff regularly organize SG events like Inquisitor games or Mordheim campaigns.

EDIT: Incidentally we have a player-organized Epic Medusa V campaign starting there next week. :)

what I dont get is how some locations are so hostile towards the specialist Games, I mean I dont even hear about that level of angst from GW towards other companies games so why go out of their way to be haters towards their own games?

Hi!

I think its a sales issue. Some store managers are evaluated by their sales volume, so anything that detracts from thier steady sellers might be viewed hostilely.
